Classic 'revival history' book

Wesley Duewel has certainly done us a favour with the publication of this book. Written in a very readable style, it held my attention from start to finish, and that's a full 350+ pages worth! He gives more than a glimpse of a great many spiritual awakenings right through the centuries. Many are well-known stories, others less so; but all are absorbing and detailed accounts of fascinating moves of God's Spirit. An essential study for anyone interested in revivals. I loved it and continue to use it for reference.

I had never heard of this book until Doc. Billye Brim mentioned it on a Christian program I was watching and I am glad she did. If you want to be inspired to pray for our nation, then you must get this book! It covers a lot of revivals in places that, until I read this book, did not know had had revivals. By the time you get to the end if you do not feel like hitting your knees and praying for our ailing nation, then you need to get saved!

Brain Interconnectivity

Muniz has produced a good rendition of some of the elemental
aspects of brain functionality. For instance, the book explains
that the brain deals with large sensory capacities by acting as
a system to prioritize and organize sensory information for
decision making purposes. In addition, the brain employs
neural associations to determine the subjective value of inputs.

Critique:
The brain does more than prioritize, it develops a solution set
which might vary significantly amongst individuals looking at the
same problem. Thus, educators have formulated a process called
"critical thinking" in order to deal with the plethora of valid but
different solution sets coming from small group members
examining the same facts and sets of assumptions.

The operational systems that carry out decisions are essentially
learned behaviors. The learning comes from personal
observations, training from parents and later on via reading
and interaction in small groups in places like pre-kindergarten.

In addition, the brain does more than prioritize information.
The brain has a vast information storing and retrieval
capability to be able to access information which is the
subject of the decision making process itself. This aspect
seems to be absent in the book although the author does
mention an overall system to execute decision making.

The brain's storage and information retrieval capacity is
a subject for continuing discussion both here and in the
afterlife. One of the remaining unsolved questions is this.
What happens to the stored information once a person dies?
Is this information resident on a chakra level? If so, how can
it be accessed?

Overall, the book is a good primer on introducing psychology.
There are areas which could be developed further. i.e. the
brain storage, retrieval and associative connections

The BEST Native American Style Flute resource around

‘Enchanted Journeys’ by Todd Chaplin is a comprehensive resource for learning the Native American Style Flute, consisting of an instruction book, accompanying DVD, and exclusive access to online learning media.

The instruction book is divided into beginning player and advancing player sections, with multiple chapters in each covering key topics such as finger positioning, scales, rhythm, embellishments, and improvisation to name a few. In addition the guide provides written music (Nakai Tablature) for a number of songs and even tips on how to create your own melodies. There are additional sections specific to the Drone flute and the Mayan temple flute. Throughout the book there are clear diagrams, colour pictures, and references to the accompanying DVD and online material.

Todd Chaplin’s ‘Enchanted Journeys’ packs in a whole lot of information that just keeps giving. This is an extremely useful resource that is easy to follow, very informative, and wonderfully encouraging. I found the accompanying DVD particularly helpful; it’s a bit like having a series of private lessons from Todd. I also enjoyed progressing through the various exercises using the Online Learning Media – it’s added some structure and support to my practice. Every section offers ideas and options to facilitate further learning.

‘Enchanted Journeys’ is a beautifully presented and comprehensive resource ideal for beginning or advancing players of the Native American Style Flute. There are many hours of learning in this resource, and I thoroughly recommend it.

5 Star guide for Native American flutes

Best instructions I have used for learning and playing Native American flutes [ALL kinds]. The only "disappointment" is that the DVD is not playable in USA DVRs but it will play in your computer and all instructions are available online with the password that Todd gives you in his book.

Todd Chaplin has done a stellar job in producing Enchanted Journeys- The Essential Guide to Native American Style Flute". I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in playing Native American Style Flutes. Todd's book covers detailed instruction that includes how to hold the flute, simple scales and simple tunes through to advanced techniques and embellishments that will lift anyone's playing and covers instruction on playing with others as well as song structure. Instruction on how to maintain and care for your flute is also included.
Todd writes of how to blossom as a player and the art of improvisation among a wealth of information that is backed up by the accompanying DVD and Online Learning Media. All is which is easy to follow. Todd includes instruction on how to play the Drone flute and Mayan Temple Flute.
This book has clear illustrations and beautiful photography. The spiral binding makes it easy to lie flat or to prop up on a music stand. The size of the book is convenient to carry around in a bag so this powerful resource can be at hand.
I have been playing the Native American Style Flute for 3 years and found myself stuck in familiar patterns. Through experimenting with the techniques in "Enchanted Journeys" I have discovered a new relationship with my flute and am looking forward to more exploration on the exciting journey

Highly Motivational

This is the kind of book that you would like to have with you at all times on the bus, on the plane, the park or just relaxing while waiting for the train. In it, you will find great actionable and useful tips that you can apply to your everyday activities to change your life for the better.

Bear in mind that your transformation will be slow and almost unnoticeable at first but as time passes you will start to realize that you have actually moved form who you used to be to a much better person.

What I love most in the book is the dream universe, I have never thought in that line before and it's simple and very easy to adopt and apply to your life every single day, it wouldn't cost you a penny but the results will be far beyond your wildest dreams.

Am definitely adding it to the things I do to become a much better person on daily bases and applying it as well. Remember, application is the key to moving forward daily.

Having purchased and read also her other books, I must say that this is a another must have book, focusing on ways or secrets to achieve your dreams.

In this book, you will know the techniques and steps to slowly reach your God given dreams, planted in your heart.

It made me realize that even little actions have great impact in conquering your dreams in life. So, now, I must watch out for my little actions.

This book is easy to read, direct to the point and makes you want to take action.

I like how the author started it with some details of how her dreams are unfolding before her very eyes. It gave me a vision of how I'd like my dreams to unfold right before my very eyes too! Giving real examples on how to make your dreams come true is very helpful.

Thank you so much Sha for sharing this to us. It is truly inspiring and worth the time to read. Now, I will have to take action and give you an update after a year :)

Great series, easy to use, solid phonics lessons

Even though most schools will tell you they teach phonics, most really do not. At best, they begin teaching phonics in first grade after teaching high frequency words with flashcards in kindergarten... which simply teaches young children that the way to read is to memorize what a "word picture" looks like. From everything I've read, getting a kid who has learned to read this way to put in the effort to learn phonics is like pulling teeth so I was determined to teach my daughter proper reading with phonics.

Once my daughter knew her letter sounds (thank you Leap Frog's Letter Factory!), I began showing her how the sounds could be "squashed" together to make words and how those sounds were inside of words. Since this concept requires a developmental leap, it can not be rushed or forced. Slowly she began to understand (she was 3.5 at the time) and one day, the light bulb clicked on. She could pick out the letters in simple words that she heard and read simple C-V-C words like 'cat'. That's when I went looking for the next step.

I checked out several books from the library, including "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", "Phonics Pathways", and "The Reading Lesson". Of those, I liked "Phonics Pathways" the best and bought a copy. I began spending 5 minutes a day, a few days a week, working with my daughter but quickly realized that she HATED the book and it's boring lessons. So, I bought "Explode the Code 1". What a difference!

While the pictures are crude, they were just enough to catch my daughter's interest. Since each lesson has the same format, the same types of activities, she quickly learned what was expected on each type of page - a great comfort to a young child learning to do something new and difficult. We spend no more than 10 minutes 5 days a week but she has made great progress in learning to read; happily trying to add things to my shopping list and trying to sound out words she sees other places.

We also use the Bob Books (Level 1) and the Now I'm Reading books (Level 1, Animal Antics) to reinforce what she is learning and to get her comfortable reading slightly longer stories on her own. Of the two, I prefer the Now I'm Reading stories. Both are very phonics based but the pictures and stories in NIR are much better than in Bob.

Should you use Explode the Code with your child? It depends...
(1) Can your child reliably say each letter? Not the letter name but the basic letter sound like "c" in "cat" and "x" in "box"? If not, start with the Before the Code books or try the Leap Frog DVD "The Letter Factory". Do your child a favor and keep it fun - skip the flashcards.
(2) Can your child blend letters together to read simple C-V-C words like "cat"? Does she understand the concept? If not, play word games to get her hearing those letter sounds, play "spot the letter ___" in stores where each of you try to find things that start with a specific letter. Remember, this stage can not be forced and pushing your child too hard, too soon, may turn her off to reading. It's better to wait several months and try again than it is to try to force your child to be the first one in preschool to learn to read. It's not a race, it's an education.
(3) Once your child knows those letter sounds and understands the concept of sounding out words, you are ready for these books.

Does your child need fine motor skills? Not really. Yes, these books teach writing and many of the pages have the child circling or crossing through choices as well as printing words - but you don't actually have to do that. My daughter's fine motor skills are only now becoming good enough to learn to print but that hasn't stopped her from learning to read. We usually snuggle up together when we use this book and she points to the correct answer instead of marking it. We simply skip the "copy these words" pages or she tells me the letters she would need to write.

I'm a children's reading specialist and author ("Teaching Kids To Read for Dummies"). I've reviewed dozens of workbooks but use only a handful of the best. Nancy Hall's workbooks are among my favorites because they make absolute good sense. I could go into a lot of technical hoopla about the systematic and progressive teaching of "phonemic awareness", but really, this is what it boils down to: Nancy Hall knows her stuff and presents it in an easy to follow, attractive way with plenty of repetition and reinforcement. Great books.

Excellent reinforcement for your phonics program

I bought this workbook when my child was about halfway through "How to Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons." We were beginning to stall out and "Explode the Code" has been a good choice for expanding our phonics program. "Explode the Code" contains worksheets that reinforce both reading and writing. The same sound is covered again and again but with different activities so that it doesn't seem repetitious. It's very hands-on and my five year old can work fairly independently on it, once I read him the directions. "Explode the Code" is a nice supplement. I also recommend the "Victory Drill Book" for helping children improve the speed at which they read.

Tenko Raykov is a Professor of Measurement and Quantitative Methods at Michigan State University. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Psychology from Humboldt University in Berlin. George A. Marcoulides is a Professor of Research Methods and Statistics at the University of California, Riverside. He is the Editor of Structural Equation Modeling, the Quantitative Methodology Series, and an editorial board member of numerous other measurement and statistics journals.

The most useful part of this book is the annotated SPSS and SAS scripts. This allows you to run the analyses, even if you don't fully understand all of the background equations (which can be somewhat overwhelming!). There is also plenty of useful help in understanding your statistical results. I also like the recommendations and cautions that the authors include.

Best for grad students or other advanced researchers.
