Lots of gaps - downloads don't match book

Short|Fast|Focused.
With 29 pages of text, it is short.
It is fast. I gave up at page 8.

Problem is that they expect the reader to fill in the gaps.
Rather than give you full source code of each file, they leave that as an "exercise" for the reader.

The sample code in the book is partial code, and doesn't even bother giving you a path/filename.ext.

It may be useful to the author to job his memory, but the rest of us are out of luck.

Well I paid the author, so that he could teach me quickly, not so that I would have the joy of filling in the gaps.
If the author would have added in even 20 pages of complete examples, it would still be a short book of 49 pages.

Save your money.

The only thing this book has for it, is that it is the only RequireJS book on Amazon.
That is not good enough.

An alternative is PluralSight's course 'JavaScript Design Patterns', section 'Asynchronous Module Definitions'. This costs $29/month, but is actually useful as an introduction, unlike this book.

Follow up with the requirejs.org website. This book is that useless.

Complete rip off

Bought the kindle version for $10 and it took less than 15 minutes to read it. The entire book is a bunch of configuration skeletons completely void of any meaning explanation or detail. In fact the authors favorite sentence is "for more detail please see - followed by a reference to someone else's work on github"

Hands down the worst reference I've ever read. Going to try and get a refund from Amazon but I'm probably stuck with it.

Be warned: don't waste your money!

Update; amazon cheerfully refunded my money. They continue to be the best company to deal with EVER!

A solid starting point for intermediate javascript programmers

I have worked with require.js and have done a good amount of R&D into this javascript library. I felt this book was not as thorough as it could have been. Mr. Franko doesn't spend any time covering the concepts behind Asynchronous Module Definition nor does he go into much detail about how require brings AMD to client-side javascript. If you are new to the concept of AMD and large scale client-side builds this book will not be a one stop resource for you.

That said this is an excellent starting point and reference for intermediate js programmers. If you are already familiar with AMD this book is a good introduction to require.js. If you are unfamiliar with a modular workflow you will need to put in extra research to understand what this library is for and how to use it. This book educates by concise examples. It covers everything from your most basic project to integration with your favorite front-end libraries and frameworks. Mr. Franko even introduces you to the require.js command line tool for production packaging of your project (r.js).

You will not "learn something new in an instant" and if you are unfamiliar with modular javascript workflows this book will not save you from having to do your own research (there are excellent articles and videos about AMD javascript on the internet).

If, however, you're an intermediate level javascript programmer looking for a starting point with require.js then this is the book for you. If you are looking to have a handy require.js reference nearby this book will serve you well.

This delightful book covers the 50 things to see and some of them are: 'North Star, Venus, Orion Nebula, Mars, Jupiter, The Milky Way, Comets, the International Space Station, and even birds'. Just a fascinating read for me which I will go back and refer to after my telescope is purchased. At the end of the book there are schedules for total solar eclipses and Constellation maps for the Northern Hemisphere. Great book with lots of insight. Easy to follow and find what you're looking for!

I recently got into using a small telescope I inherited from my grandfather. Thank you to the author for helping me find new and interesting things with the telescope. I was able to see Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. My son also likes to pull open the book and ask what new thing we can look at on the weekend. Great book with a lot of insight for me and my family. Go Utes!

Not going to lie, I was a little skeptical about how useful this guide would be (I mean, I've never heard of this Read guy before). But it is well written and informative. Did you know the North Star is the 48th brightest star in the night sky? Time to go into the darkness and find me some stars!

How deep we can go into God and this power depends on how much we are willing to let go of the wounds and inner pain we harbor either against God, others or ourselves. One prayer which the Lord Jesus taught us to pray commonly is called "The Lord's Prayer". This prayer calls us to live as we pray, and to pray as we will live. In other words, our daily thoughts, actions, and beliefs must strive for the same level of attunement with God that we seek in prayer."

About the Author
Darl Kuhn is a senior database administrator working for Oracle. He handles all facets of database administration from design and development to production support. He also teaches advanced database courses at Regis University in Colorado. Darl does volunteer DBA work for the Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group. He has a graduate degree from Colorado State University and lives near Spanish Peaks, Colorado, with his wife, Heidi, and daughters, Brandi and Lisa.

Normally I don't like books that are essentially recapitulation of manuals but this was well done.

This book is mostly a restatement of the Oracle manuals. But it excels over other books of the same nature in two ways:

1. the authors do from time to time offer some of their own experiences. This has become one of the reasons I continue to buy technical books: I am looking for the author's experiences, not basics I can read from Oracle. So they offer a little in places where it makes a difference.

2. this is a one stop shop for everything index related in Oracle. Details about indexes and indexing in Oracle are all over the Oracle manual set. This book covers most of it up through 11g. This means it can save you a great deal of time because it coalesces index related material under one cover. For that it gets much higher marks than it would have otherwise gotten from me. Again it is this book's ability to save you hours of research time by putting everything index related in one place that really makes this book a good device.

I recommend it to beginner and intermediate skill levels. Nothing hard to read here, good summaries all over. But if you have been doing Oracle for 10 years or more, and are up-to-date with 11g then you won't find too much here so not a five star item.

No explosive revelations for the DBA with graying ponytail and sandals but it covers the topic well. For the newcomer or as a review (I found it helpful), it is a good book.

Darl Kuhn is one of the best teachers when it comes to database back up and recovery; he knows what he is talking about. I had him as a teacher at Regis University and we used the Expert Indexing in Oracle. This book is well-explained in every step of the backup and pitfalls that you should be aware of; it also has extra information on most of the databases. I kept the book as a reference desk.
