Be very careful! Watch for errors and mistakes in content in this book. I will give you an example from a end-of-chapter test question:

"What is the maximum number of intervals that can be stored by vSphere Data Protection?"

a:24
b:8
c:16
d:32

The book states that the correct answer is "32"

By searching the book, the only reference to "intervals" points to the vSphere Replication feature and the stated maximum interval is 24.

So, this means that either the chapter question was wrong, or the information in the text was wrong, or there are chapter questions that refer to material that is not covered in the text.

The truth is, once the authors finished the book, they did not want to spend the time and expense of doing additional fact-checking or review-editing of the material.

This book is sold as a "certification guide". If nothing else, the information should be accurate. If not, the whole book has to be considered suspect. Do you want to spend your money on a certification voucher, take the test, and miss questions because of errors in the guide? Do you think the publisher or authors will reimburse you?

Do a google search on the exact phrase of the question that I stated. You will see it.

Agroforestry has come of age during the past fifteen years. During this period, activities and interest in agroforestry education and training have increased tremendously, as in other aspects of agroforestry development. Today, agroforestry is taught at the senior undergraduate and postgraduate levels in many institutions around the world, either as a separate subject or as a part of the regular curricula of agriculture, forestry, ecology, and other related programs. Although several books on the subject have been published during the past few years, there is still no single publication that is recognized as a textbook. This book is an effort to make up for this deficiency. The need for such a book became obvious to me when I was faced with the task of teaching a graduate-level course in agroforestry at the University of Florida five years ago. Subsequently, the Second International Workshop on Professional Education and Training held here at the University of Florida in December 1988 recommended that the preparation of an introductory textbook be undertaken as a priority activity for supporting agroforestry education world-wide. The various educational and training courses that I have been involved in, and my interactions with several instructors and students of agroforestry in different parts of the world, further motivated me into this venture.

I have read this book. The author seems to lack of experience. Although the author has experience in the developing country for many years, but the contents of the book are not a scientific writen. I hope he can improve and write better than that.

Can Russia really rebuild and take over Europe?

Chris says he wrote this a few years back and it just rushed out of him. The story is about a European world where those in the military are looked down upon, and that money in the military budget really needs to be used for some feel good social experiment. The good young citizens of Germany, France, England all sit around the camp fire and sing Kumbaya and have nothing to worry about. Oh, the Russians, nah, they are long time finished. But in Russia a new Stalin/Putin has arisen and no longer will Russia be ignored or pushed around. This book is about what happens when Russia has had enough. As to those in Germany, France, England who reject that force can be used to occupy their country, who say we can change the world by holding a protest march, and "they " the occupiers have to change, well let us see how well your body resists bullets. This book shows what can happen when a nation ignores the old saying "Si vis pacem, para bellum." As to "Where's the USA?" the book points out what happens when the US gets tired of being attacked by the citizens of Europe and leaves. Why should the US bail them out a 3rd time? I could not put it down. A cautionary tale of what the future might portend.

An excellent preview of a coming war

The Old Russian Bear has taken enough garbage from the European Union, Islamists and the West. This novel lays out an entirely possible war plan for driving the Americans out of Europe and the political posturing that would result in a militarily weakened E.U. coalition. I would love to see a follow up novel.

Close Enough to Reality to Cause Cold Sweat

OK, just what does one do when confronted with overwhelming force? Chris Nuttall's answer: go down swinging. And even if the good guys lose -- as they do here -- the bad guys know they've been one h--l of a fight.

"The Fall of Night" begins in a manner very reminiscent of Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising." There are plot parallels, but they diverge as one goes along. Clancy ends with "the good guys" triumphant. Not here, though. The end is gut-wrenching and leaves a rather hollow feeling inside. There are a couple of events, however, which give one hope that not all is lost in the long run. (Read the book to find out what they are!)

The quality of the writing is quite good. The author has claimed that this is one of his earlier books. Maybe so, but I've read some of his "later" efforts, and this one seems much smoother to me. There aren't the speed bumps -- poor word choice, continuity errors, name confusion -- that seem to crop up all too often. I'd suspect that there was a good bit of careful and commendable copy editing before this edition reached the market.

One aspect of storytelling that Chris Nuttall excels at: characters. You may not like the men and women he writes about, and few of them are unalloyed heroes/heroines or villains/villainesses. (Villainesses is so a word!) Still, they seem real in the sense that they have a existence beyond the written page; one can understand their motivations. Some of those motivations are, quite truthfully, astonishing, e.g., the heroic Russian sabotage agent and the travel passes. Yes, the ending is a bit of a downer, although leavened by the reunion of two of the more admirable (but still very human) characters.

"The Fall of Night" is a novel that begs for a sequel. I'm not too sure that a three-volume series is indicated, or perhaps only two: one to get into the bleakest of situations, and another to get out of it. It'll be interesting to see which way Mr. Nuttall jumps.

Solid IT Audit Fundamentals

The Basics of IT Audit: Purposes, Processes, and Practical Information by Stephen Gantz is the latest in "The Basics of" series by Syngress.

It is intended to "provide you with a thorough, yet concise overview of IT auditing. Packed with specific examples, this book gives insight into the auditing process and explains regulations and standards such as the ISO-27000, series program, CoBIT, ITIL, Sarbanes-Oxley, and HIPPA."

At 270 pages it is one of the longer books in this series and like the others, is intended to provide a high level overview of the subject matter. It begins by explaining the reasoning behind auditing and quickly moves into the different roles and responsibilities that one can expect during an audit engagement. The book dedicates separate chapters for internal and external audit as well a chapter explaining the different types of audits.

It goes on to spend several chapters breaking down the components and life cycle of an audit before delving into the different methodologies and frameworks available (NIST, ISO/IEC, COBIT, etc.). The book ends by providing an overview of Audit-Related Organizations, Standards, and Certifications.

All-in-all The Basics of IT Audit is a good primer for anyone just getting started in IT Audit or students pursuing a degree in IT Assurance. The book also does a great job demystifying the audit process and is recommended for anyone in IT who may be involved in their company's audit process.

About the Author
Roman Diaz has been practicing origami for nearly 20 years. During this time he has become a well-known origami designer worldwide and has been invited as special guest and lecturer to origami conventions in Spain, France, Argentina, Italy, Germany, Colombia, Chile, Canada, Brazil, England, USA, and Japan. Roman is a veterinary surgeon working with dogs and cats and pursues his passion for paper folding as a part-time origami artist in his hometown of Montevideo, Uruguay.

Fun kit. This is not just a book

Fun kit. This is not just a book. It is a boxed set that has an origami book, a chess board, and papers to fold the chess pieces.The book is lovely - nicely illustrated with detailed folding diagrams. The chess board is very nice - It unfolds into a board that is about 20 inches square.
There are many models of cats and dogs. They are folded separately and then glued onto a base to make the chessmen. The cat and dog models are very nice on their own, but they are a bit complex.
Box measures about 11 inches square. It open like a book. Inside is the stuff - the book, chessboard and papers. These items are encased in a plastic "clamshell" type package that is glued to the inside bottom of the box. It was very difficult to remove this from the box.
The box is nice too - very sturdy with thick sides with a magnetic closure. And it is perfect for holding the chess board and the chess pieces.

I think this set will appeal to many people, including fans of chess, cats, dogs, and fans of origami. This set includes 100+ sheets of origami paper, printed with various designs (including photos of fur), along with a surprisingly substantial book with visual instructions that make it really easy. I loved how the dogs and cats are sitting in cute little positions, and each sits on its own chesspiece marked stand. The nice 2-sided chessboard is included. I’ve just gotten started with making my favorite cats and dogs first, and I’m really enjoying this set!

Fun for a rainy vacation week

I got this for a present for my daughter and husband. He loves chess and she loves animals. Making the pieces was a fun activity for both of them. Some of the animals were more challenging than others. The board was very think. This is a great long term project and display piece. I received this product at a reduced price for an honest review.

Harry Dresden, having finally succumbed to Mab and become the Winter Knight, is hiding out. The spirit of the island can help keep his debilitating headaches at bay, and keep Mab off his back. She shows up with a job for him—help Nicodemus Archleone steal the Holy Grail from Hades. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s Mab, so nothing is straightforward. Harry, having a good sense for survival, is quite sure Nicodemus is going to do his best to prevent anyone from surviving the experience and that Mab has motives she’s not mentioning. Harry brings in Murphy as backup, Michael Carpenter plays his usual stabilizing role, and the rest of Nicodemus’ team is, though reprehensible, quite an entertaining bunch of supernatural criminals. Harry is incredibly well suited to the heist, especially the back-stabbing, convoluted, conspiratorial heist that Skin Game turns into—and it’s clear that all of this plotting is leading to another, even more epic confrontation. To top it off, a few loose ends—including a surprising solution to Harry’s headaches—get tied back into the story. This should be just what fans of the Dresden Files series would hope for. "Dear God in Heaven, Harry."

An ex-cop, a Denarian, a mercenary sorcerer, a wanted warlock, a shapeshifter, and a Warden of the White Council all walk into a slaughterhouse...

Alright, that joke isn’t really set up to elicit a lot of laughs, but this book does have plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Skin Game is the fifteenth book in Jim Butcher’s fantastic Dresden Files series, and this review is going to assume that you have already read the first fourteen books. If not, you should get on that.

Since this novel is the 15th out of a proposed series of about 20 books, you can expect this number to hold a certain degree of significance in the life of Harry Dresden. Much like in the 10th book, Small Favor, Queen Mab wants Harry to do something despicable for her, and he doesn’t really have a choice in the matter. In this case, he's robbing the Lord of the Underworld for some of the Church's most powerful artifacts--and he is allied with Nicodemus Archleone, the baddest of the Denarians and Harry's greatest archenemy.

Harry Dresden has had a rough time of it so far, and the books thus far have had their ups and downs; lots of fist-in-the-air moments juxtaposed with some cringe-worthy scenes of forced, awkward dialogue. Skin Game is a return to some of Butcher’s best characters, and it is easily one of the better books in the series.

I loved this book for many reasons, but the greatest one is this: Harry is back.

While the last few books have been weighed down pretty heavily by the established lore of Dresden’s world, Skin Game introduces some fresh faces to bring back Harry’s dry wit and light-heartedness that have been so notably absent. He is less mopey about being the Winter Knight, or at least less vocal about it, and he is just as affably awkward around beautiful women as he was at the start of the series. After having dated Susan Rodriguez, resisted the advances of Lara Raith, and thoroughly sexed the Queen of Air and Darkness, you’d think Harry would be able to cope with alluring fun bags and shapely thighs. Nevertheless, this lack of character development was actually a bonus, because it made him more like the Dresden of old, the young renegade wizard who didn’t carry the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Still, that doesn’t mean that we’re wiping the slate clean. Harry has been a pretty awful friend for the past couple books, and that karmic justice is catching up to him now. He can’t keep up the lone-wolf protector routine forever, and Butcher brings some of these issues to the fore here.

In addition, Harry has been the Winter Knight for a while now, and it shows in this book. It isn’t always explicitly shown, but the kinds of injuries he sustains and ignores, the kinds of comments he makes without realizing, all indicate a deeper dependence on the mantle. Several of these moments gave me chills (pun intended), because like it or not, Harry Dresden the gumshoe private investigator is disappearing on us, slowly being replaced by something colder and darker.

Harry is also considerably cleverer than in previous books; he’s no longer the fire-slinging brute who stumbles upon victory by sheer luck. A wizard can overcome almost any obstacle given proper time to plan, and Harry finally seems to be following his own advice, devising plans that make his contract suicide after Chichén Itzá look like child’s play.

While Dresden still cracks off plenty of Star Wars references, Skin Game adds a slew of new fandoms to his repertoire, so be on the lookout for some Monty Python and Lord of the Rings as well, to name a couple.

I did not receive an ARC of this book. I didn’t even pre-order it and wait to read it after a good night’s rest. I stayed up until midnight, and then until 3 a.m. (because apparently midnight on EST isn’t good enough for Amazon), just so I could start as soon as possible. Then I stayed up until sleep sucker-punched me into unconsciousness; and when I woke up, I started reading again. And you know what?

It was worth it.

After more than fifteen months of waiting, Jim Butcher has provided me with a book that improves upon the best aspects of past Dresden stories. Am I biased for being a long-time fan of the series? Probably. But fifteen books in, this story isn’t really for newcomers, is it? This review is for all of those readers who, like me, have questioned whether Harry Dresden was worth following for another six years or more, whether Jim Butcher had lost interest in his flagship character after more than a decade and a half of writing about him.

I like to think this book is a tribute to the fans. It has pulpy fight scenes and distractingly beautiful women, and the build-up to the heist of Hades is something to behold. Harry is becoming more aware of the community of allies that he has created, and he is becoming wise in his years. Dresden makes up for a lot of debts he has accumulated over the years, and it feels like we finally get some closure to things that have bothered Harry for ages now.

If you’ve read this far, you’re good people. I like good people, and I liked this book. You can do the math.

I'll kick this off with my favorite quotes:

"I can't tell you how many jobs I've done without a hitch since the last time I saw you, Dresden. You walk through the door and everything goes to hell."
"That's embroidered on my towels, actually," I said.

"What you are telling me," she said, "is that you have never shared your life with another over the long term. The closest you have come to it is providing a home and affection for a being which is entirely your subject and in your control."
"Well, not at bath time..."

"I know you've been aching to have your hands on my staff," I said to Ascher, as Nicodemus examined the altar for himself. I held out my hand. "But I'd rather be the one fondling my tool. Wizards are weird like that."

PARKOUR! Because Harry Dresden says so.

Cold Days was easily one of the best entries of the Dresden series. It's probably my favorite. And it definitely left big shoes to fill for any book that would follow it. Well, Skin Game does it wonderfully. I was hanging on to every word. The tension between Harry and Nicodemus was beyond palpable and I kept waiting for the shoe to drop! And boy does it drop.

This book was really exciting, gripping, and a true nail biter. I wasn't sure where Butcher planned to go with this one putting Nicodemus front and center. Either we'd finish the book with a better understanding of the character (potentially liking him more) or we'd see Harry do away with him once and for all. He is definitely a character you love to hate.

The heist plot was great and we got to see more focus on potential future players in the series. I liked that everyone was out for themselves. It kept things unpredictable.

I did miss Thomas in this entry as well as Molly, but the story is still fantastic. We get a great deal of Murphy, Michael, and Butters to make up for it so that's good enough for me. There were some really great twists and turns and several characters get upgrades in power. One of my favorite aspects of any series are the strength of the relationships. Harry never has it easy, ever. You really feel for the guy. While Cold Days certainly had emotional moments, there are some pivotal developments here too that make his journey even more special to me.

I am a newer fan of these books having marathoned the entire series back to back this year. Admittedly a lot of the story blurs together for me so it's difficult to distinguish one book from the next (save for books like Changes and Cold Days). Of course that stops now since I'm finally caught up with everyone else. But I will say that I am glad it happened with this book because it was a particularly satisfying read!

Harry juggles plenty of hats as it is, but I'm looking forward to how he handles just a few more in the next entry. Fans will definitely love this one.

Another great Dresden novel.

Changes – the fall and decline of Harry Dresden as we know him.
Ghost Story – a few days as Harry, the Ghost.
Cold Days – Harry comes back to life, and is quickly involved in Fae politics.
Skin Game:
Out of touch, living on Demonreach for the past year, while getting back into better shape (Parkour!, baby.) Then, he gets a visit from Mab, his Fae boss. She needs him to help out Nicodemus Archleone, a sworn enemy of Dresden’s. Yet, he has no chose but to follow Mab’s orders, or die a slow and painful death. And what does ole Nick have planned? He wants to break into Hades’ (yes, the Greek god of the underworld) vault in Nevernever. Is Nick planning to play Harry? Is Mab playing Harry? Can Harry survive this, alive? And like Butters still is trying to figure out, is Harry still human or has he become something else? Something Harry wonders too.

A few points about the end, (major spoilers.)
The interactions between Harry and Maggie are too precious.
It was good to see Uriel, again.
Mouse continues to be a scene stealer.
Harry and Murph’s relationship evolves nicely.
I don’t think Butcher dealt enough with “parasite’s” aftermath enough, in my opinion.

A Practical Resource

This book is a very useful resource for the therapist, or as a self-help book for those able and willing to work diligently with the material. The author provides a good deal of practical resources, such as questionnaires, tests, and exercises. This approach has been recognised as useful by those working in other noted therapies, such as ACT.

This is a must read book for psychologists who want to integrate psychotherapy, positive psychology, and quality of life research and practice. Although related to traditional psychotherapy approaches, Frisch's QOL therapy makes psychology and QOL relevant to ALL people. This groundbreaking book provides psychologists and related human service providers with a conceptual framework and concrete tools to help all people who desire to enhance the quality of their lives. Grounded in basic psychological and QOL science, the approach extends far beyond existing approaches to life enhancement by providing a broader, but more nuanced multi-domain perspective (e.g., spiritual, work, play, neighborhood, self domains). In this manner, Frisch provides helpers with a more differentiated assessment and intervention approach to improving lives.

Overhyped

This is not a self-help book. It is not even a psychology book. It is a clinical guide for institutions. Most of the philosophy of this book consists of trite one-liners. It isn't very practical except in a very controlled environment, where the client has alot of time to waste, such as prisons or hospitals, and where the client has absolutely no direction in life whatsoever. For current happiness research that is simple, practical, and enlightening, try reading the paper THE BENEFITS OF FREQUENT POSITIVE AFFECT: DOES HAPPINESS LEAD TO SUCCESS by Sonja Lyubomirsky. For a simple, practical, and a quick fix, I would recommend RATIONAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY by Maxie Maultsby.

Excellent InSight

The other review appears to be misposted. This book, written for Christians, provides readers with a highly informative perspective on shepherd life in Palestine. Since most don't understand what shepherds do, it's commentary helps bring "color" to Psalm 23, giving it more substance on a personal level in one's walk with Jesus Christ. An excellent book!

Scholarly and personable

CW Slemmings' books answer all those old testament questions that you have always wondered about ... he explains the feasts of Israel as they prefigure Christ in "Thus Shalt Thou Serve", the layout of the temple as it applies to salvation in "Made According to Pattern", and further expounds on our salvation in his book about the priestly garments entitled "These are the garments".
In this precious book he shows us how Jesus, our Good Shepherd, cares for us, just as the shepherds of ancient times lovingly tended their flocks. His writing style draws one in and is easy to understand, at the same time Mr Slemming makes very deep connections between the old and new testament that will astonish and comfort you. These books were my first introduction to the synchronicity between the Old and New Testaments, and I would recommend them to anyone interested in the Old Testament roots of Christianity.

Fantastic Gem!

I discovered this little booklet by accident, and after reading the reviews, decided to purchase it. Now I want to buy one for all my friends. It is a quick read - about an hour or so, but I have learned more in that one hour regarding this Psalm than I have probably ever learned, and I have been a Bible study teacher for quite some time!

I once heard a non-Christian say that she went to church one time, and the pastor happened to be speaking on this Psalm. She said that he kept referencing how stupid sheep are, and how they don't see well, and since we are referred to as sheep in scripture, we are basically blind idiots who need to follow a shepherd. She ended her story with, "Why would I ever ascribe to a faith where people blindly follow a leader who calls himself "The Good Shepherd" and expects people to follow Him blindly?" I cringed when she told me the story, because as an inductive Bible Study leader, I teach the exact opposite. God doesn't expect us to check our brains at the door to faith, and faith in Him is certainly NOT blind! I am going to give her a copy of this book, and hope that Mr. Slemming's short booklet can undo what has already been done!

And I guess that is my point about this book. A seasoned Christian can learn much and be encouraged, exhorted, and refreshed, and a non-Christian can see the heart behind Christ as the Good Shepherd, and that the Christian faith is not a blind faith.

Get your hands on a copy of it. You will be happy you did!
