I bought this book and knew very little about digital technology (it was covered briefly in a course I took on computer organization). This book helped make the information very clear. I liked the fact that it continually tests you throughout the book and contains learning objectives at the beginning of each and every chapter. Excellent layout and very well done!

High Quality Full Color Illustrated Fast-Paced, High Adventure Fantasy Story

I am a homeschooling mother with an interest in graphic books, both fiction and nonfiction, for adult or child readers. I just finished reading this book. However my first encounter with it was when it was released three years ago (2008) and my then-ten year old son saw it in the library and borrowed it. He loved the book. Since then two others in the series have been released. In the last month my older son, now 13, re-read or read all three (to find out what happened since he last read the first book) as did my younger son who is ten years old. The Amulet series is a hit with my sons. I also enjoyed the story.

Emily is a human girl on a hero's journey aided by her younger brother, to save their mother's life. This is a fantasy story involving magic powers. It starts on Earth but has a gate to another world, a mysterious land which looks wild and medieval in its natural state and filled with walking and talking animals and weird monsters, living "stuffed animals" and robots, but which has modern technology such as flying ships and a house that looks like a Transformer robot that walks and has a defense weaponry.

One of the first things noticed about the book is its high quality full color illustrations which makes it more visually appealing than some other graphic books for children on the market. The pages are high quality glossy paper.

This is a high action story that involves brushes with death, escapes and fighting. It's well written in that it is a solid hero's journey story which being done well, draws the reader in immediately, and makes us root for the hero from the start. We want to find out what happens next and we want the good guys to win.

The book ends with a cliff-hanger so this is not a complete story in one volume; the series must be read to find out what happens next.

Highly recommended for a tween or young teen who enjoys graphic novels, or for reluctant readers about fantasy, adventure and the battle of good against evil.

One word of caution for parents, there is an emotional scene at the beginning that some sensitive young readers (possibly drawn to the book since it's an easy to read graphic format book) may find disturbing but it's no different than the typical "child's parent dies by violent sudden death" that is in so many Disney animated children's movies. I've got no problem with it, I'm just mentioning it just in case it's an issue for some young readers.

My students love it

I'm a third grade teacher, and on a whim I picked up this book for my classroom library. I'm so glad I did! Not only did I love the book, my students have gone wild over it. Every student who has picked it up has been drawn into the story almost instantly. There have been actual fights over who gets to read it next, and they are always disappointed to hear that there's no second book as of yet. I haven't had a book go over this well in a long time!

Fantastic series by a creative artist

Amulet, a graphic novel by Kazu Kibuishi (Flight, Volume One, Daisy Kutter: The Last Train), is geared towards the 9-12 age group. However, the novel will captivate anyone that begins to read it as they are swept along a moving story with beautiful illustrations.

Our young heroine Emily witnesses the death of her father in the opening pages of this novel. Emily, her mother, and her brother Nevin move into the home of their missing great grandfather. There are secrets lurking within the house, one that soon ensnares Emily's mom. She's dragged from the basement by a tentacle through an open door and Emily and Nevin must go on a rescue mission to another world.

This story captivates the reader from the beginning. The reader is compelled to feel for the characters of the story, from Emily witnessing the death of her father to watching her mom being dragged away by some unknown creature. Although this is only the first part of the series the reader gets a true sense of the characters, their feelings, and their emotions and is left hanging at the end of this book and wanting more.

What really sells the story are the illustrations as they capture and convey the moods of the characters and their surroundings. The drawings have a light airy quality to them, with a simple, but moody, color palette to show off the extensive use of shadows to convey emotions of the character in graphic detail. The reader is never left wanting or wondering what the characters are thinking, the colors clearly display what they feel--the age of the great-grandfather is written into the lines on his face, the fear and courage of Emily as she seeks to save her what's left of her family. As the story progresses a darker palette is used and we are left wanting the lighter colors to return. Something unique about the drawings is that when the story first begins the characters almost look undefined. While we can read their emotions they are merely shapes on a page. However, as the story progresses they gain more depth and emotion.

This novel is a must read. A strong young heroine, with monsters and robots as well, enough to keep any crowd entertained. The moving illustrations and compelling story make this a great read and the book is highly recommended for all ages.

As a comic reader who loved Volume 1, Volume 2 does not disappoint

I have an interesting relationship with the Peculiar Children series. when I read the first novel it was because I had read its graphic novel adaptation first, due to it grabbing my attention as a comic book reader. After reading it I loved it so much that I had to read the source material as most novels that get the comic book treatment usually turn out so poor (especially ones of the young adult variety). After reading both I grew to love this series in general and wished to purchase the next entry in the series. When Hollow City came out I enjoyed it but was left wondering when the graphic novel version would be coming, while it took longer than I would have wanted its finally here. I'm happy to say that it lives up to the quality of the first graphic novel and just like its predecessor is a great comic in-itself and suitable adaptation of the novel as well. Based on Ransom Riggs novel, volume 2 of this series decides to leave the Big Fish meets X-Men like tone and story of the first volume and instead takes it in a new direction. This time (without spoiling too much) we're treated to a thriller/chase story across the desolate lands of the world during WWII and mostly involves our favorite characters from volume 1 surviving. It's a satisfying middle chapter and leaves you on the traditional cliffhanger. The art/comic translation from Cassandra Jean is fantastic feeling consistent with what we saw from volume 1 while being slightly more raw and harsh in order to fit the new setting and tone. The meshing of Riggs novels and Jean's art make for a truly great comic series, that can be enjoyed even without reading the novels. The only downside is the lack of a sneak peak for the next volume, which worries me on whether or not we will even get a graphic novel adaptation of volume 3. It would be an immense shame for them not to finish this trilogy of comics.

It displayed the words so small that I couldn't read it on my Android phone. I would have liked to continue reading the story, having read the first book, but I don't know why this one's graphics were so tiny. I'll have to get one in print.

Wise and witty verse you'll return to again and again!

Joan van Poznak writes with youthful vigor and mischievous wit about the perils and pitfalls of old age. She also looks back on her youth with a rueful eye. The best test of poetry is: do you repeatedly make your loved ones stop what they are doing to listen to you read a passage aloud? Why isn't this lady more famous? Reading between the lines of her delightful verse, I think it's because she was too busy living life to the full as a performer, then wife and mother, to publish or market her verse. Well, as she herself writes, 80 isn't too old to be discovered!

These poems are a delight.

Always witty, often poignant, these poems are a tonic. The writer is brilliant with word-play: the poems are as much about the pleasures of language as the trials of ageing. Anyone who reads one will want to read all of these charming and heartfelt looks at life's journey.

About the Author
Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin, b. June 6 (N.S.), 1799, d. Feb. 10 (N.S.), 1837, was Russia's greatest poet. His use of the vernacular as the language of poetry freed Russian writing from the constraints of tradition and set new literary standards for novelists and poets, and his preference for subjects from history and folklore brought fresh vitality to Russian literature. Anthony Briggs, Professor of Russian at Birmingham University, Senior Research Fellow at Bristol University, is a well-known writer and broadcaster on Russian cultural affairs and European poetry. His recent translation of War and Peace was critically acclaimed. Among his many publications are six editions in the Everyman's Poetry series.

Good, fast fun

This book of poems can be read quickly. It includes English translations by up to ten other poets, but 33 of the 60 poems in this book have been translated by A. D. P. Briggs. Briggs also revised the translation of the 57th. Poem 16, "The Caucasus" is credited to F. Cornford on pages xxi and 19, but the Acknowledgements on page 104 credits a book, POEMS FROM THE RUSSIAN (1943), "trans. Frances Cornfield and Esther Polianowski." Of the Pushkin poems translated by C. M. Bowra in a book from 1948, eight poems are included in this book.
The Contents lists the titles of the poems, and the Introduction explains poetic qualities which the translations in this volume attempt to match, "partly to ensure that interesting formal properties like these are not lost." (p. xv). The first paragraph on page xvi attempts to show how the poems "are grouped roughly thematically," into personal, the natural world, poetry, love, some poems of ideas, for the first half of the book. The longer works in the final portion of the book include the concluding stanzas of YEVGENY ONEGIN, Chapter 8, Stanzas 33-51.
A few things about this book seemed British to me. The word which made the least sense to me was "judder," in the poem "The Waggon of Life," on page 39. If the word was made up to produce a rhyme, the line it was in would have made more sense if it had ended with the common word, shudder:
Feeling the waggon shake and shudder.
The stanza doesn't end with: "We cry, `Slow down you silly buggy!"

This book of poems can be read quickly. It includes English translations by nine other poets, but most (33) of the 60 poems in this book have been translated by A. D. P. Briggs, who has devoted four books to Pushkin and has also edited four other volumes in the Everyman's Poetry series. Briggs also revised Chapter 8 of Oliver Elton's translation of Yevgeny Onegin, which he describes in the Introduction as, "A few stanzas from the end of the novel are included here in order to give a general impression of how the novel works." (p. xvii). Poem 16, "The Caucasus" is credited to F. Cornford on pages xxi and 19, but the Acknowledgements on page 104 credits a book, POEMS FROM THE RUSSIAN (1943), "trans. Frances Cornfield [this mistake might be due to the enormous number of actual cornfields that currently exist on this planet] and Esther Polianowski." Of the Pushkin poems translated by C. M. The longer works in the final portion of the book include the concluding stanzas of YEVGENY ONEGIN (which has 366 stanzas altogether), Chapter 8, Stanzas 33-51.
The poems "Remembrance" and "Elegy" are mentioned as examples of a Pushkinian philosophy of life. Thoughts "Settle in limpid twilight languidly distilled," as the third line of the poem "Remembrance" puts it. Pushkin is capable of other feats, and the introduction observes that one long poem, "(known in Russian as `Gavriiliada' after the angel Gabriel) is an overtly sacreligious re-enactment of several Bible stories (Adam and Eve, Joseph and Mary, the Annunciation, etc.) run together into an extended sexual romp." (p. xviii). This kind of thing is usually considered a catastrophe, as far as serious philosophy is concerned, and "In its day Pushkin could not acknowledge authorship; neither could Russian criticism until recently." (p. xviii). It reminds me of the poem, "the boys i mean are not refined," by e. e. cummings, which was only included in a limited edition of nine copies of his book, NO THANKS, in 1935, but was dropped in subsequent editions until after his death in 1962. Similarly, the introduction by A. D. P. Briggs notices Pushkin's use of "swearwords in `The Waggon of Life'," (p. xix) which Briggs called, "language unusable until recent times in both Russia and England." (p. xvii). Anything that I might say about such language might be considered totally off the subject here, but a revisionist view of the relationship between poetry and philosophy might make some personal comments appropriate here.
As author of the unpublished, unedited, and largely unwritten MY VIETNAM WAR JOKE BOOK, any claim that I might make to knowledge of philosophy is highly suspect, similarly to the status achieved by Martin Heidegger when he is considered the Nazi philosopher. In my case, the must dubious aspect of convergence might be expressed by using the phrase *peace with honor* instead of any swearword that might appear. This could be catastrophic for the poetic values involved, but purely for philosophical reasons, I would like to insert *peace with honor* in place of the swearwords in Pushkin's poem, "The Waggon of Life." The second and third stanza become:
We climb aboard the boards at dawn
Full of wild devilment and crowing;
Spurning the lanquid life with scorn,
We cry, `Go on, get *peace with honor* going!'
But by midday we've lost that boldness,
Feeling the wagon shake and judder.
Dread are the heights and dizzy gorges,
We cry, `Slow down you silly *peace with honor*!'
A few things about this book seemed British to me. The word which made the least sense to me was "judder," in the poem "The Waggon of Life," on page 39. If the word was made up to produce a rhyme, the line it was in would have made more sense if it had ended with the common word, shudder:
Feeling the waggon shake and shudder.
The stanza doesn't end with: "We cry, `Slow down you silly buggy!"

This deserves the highest rating. An echo ef eternity itself. A beatuful piece of lyrics. I recomend it to anyone with a passion for poetry. This is a classic!
