The Victorian City: Everyday Life in Dickens' London, by Judith Flanders

The nineteenth century was a time of unprecedented change, and nowhere was this more apparent than London, which, in only a few decades, grew from a compact Regency town into the largest city the world had ever seen. Technology-railways, street-lighting, and sewers-transformed both the city and the experience of city-living.

From the moment Charles Dickens, the century's best-loved novelist and London's greatest observer, arrived in the city in 1822, he obsessively walked its streets, recording its pleasures, curiosities and cruelties. Now, with him, Judith Flanders leads us through the markets, transport systems, rivers, slums, alleys, cemeteries, gin palaces, chop-houses and entertainment emporia of Dickens' London, to reveal the Victorian capital in all its variety, vibrancy, and squalor. From the colorful cries of street-sellers to the uncomfortable reality of travel by omnibus, to the many uses for the body parts of dead horses and the unimaginably grueling working days of hawker children, no detail is too small, or too strange. No one who reads Judith Flanders's meticulously researched, captivatingly written The Victorian City will ever view London in the same light again.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* By the end of the nineteenth century, London was the most populous city in world history and the center of an immense political and commercial empire that enveloped all populated continents. In his novels and essays, Charles Dickens vividly conveyed the color, dynamism, and squalor of the metropolis. Of course, Dickens had an ax to grind, so his efforts at social criticism led to some distortions. Also, he died in 1870, missing three decades of critical growth and reforms at the end of the Victorian era. Flanders, a Londoner, is a contributor to various British journals. She takes a broader and less judgmental approach than Dickens. Still, her imagery is often intense and striking even without editorial comment. Here is a putrid, disease-ridden water system filled with human and animal waste, characteristic of some of today’s Third World urban centers. At Covent Garden, home to a huge food market and theaters, and also a center for vice, rich and poor mingled on a daily basis. The streets of London were a constant assault on the senses with their noise and smell. This is a superb portrait of an exciting, thriving, and dangerous city. --Jay Freeman

Review

“Judith Flanders's erudite and vivid look at 19th-century London is a reminder that what Charles Dickens -an unflinching observer of urban wretchedness, whom Ms. Flanders rightly hails as 'the greatest recorder the London streets has ever known'-chronicled in his novels and journalism was merely life as most people then lived it...Ms. Flanders is a beguiling guide, drawing on Dickens's writings to create an irresistible portrait of the English capital at a time of unprecedented expansion... The Victorian City is the perfect companion to Dickens's work.” ―The Wall Street Journal

“Flanders uses secondary historical sources alongside Dickens's own impressions of the city to take us on a dazzling journey through an imperial city plagued by poverty and deeply divided by class... Flanders must be given credit for doing an astounding job of recreating every nook and cranny of London in this richly detailed compendium. Shying away from academic pretension, Flanders tells the epic story of this biggest and boldest Victorian city in all its complexity, with verve, color and a straightforward approach to language that still manages to give a voice to ordinary Londoners - something Dickens would no doubt approve of.” ―NPR.org

“Flanders... is giving famed English novelist and historian Peter Ackroyd a run for his money in their joint delight over all things London. In this new work, Victorian expert Flanders fields just about every question the intelligent reader might have about Dickensian London.” ―Buffalo News, 4 stars

“Weaving a tapestry as colorful as a market flower display, Flanders not only describes such things as changes in transportation but takes us right into the streets, to battle the mud and to be smothered in dust. The Victorian City is social history at its finest, a must-read for Dickens fans or anyone who loves London. It reminds us why this time period is endlessly fascinating to read about, but probably not a place we'd really want to live.” ―BookPage

“[Flanders'] imagery is often intense and striking… The streets of London were a constant assault on the senses with their noise and smell. This is a superb portrait of an exciting, thriving, and dangerous city.” ―Booklist, starred review

“A well-stuffed compendium on the transformational era in the history of London that fed both Charles Dickens' imagination and his well of outrage…. Flanders writes with bubbling enthusiasm about the old markets, Covent Garden and Smithfield, with their accompanying din and smells, and the plethora of life we only know through Dickens' eyes: the street vendors and artists, matchstick sellers, slum dwellers, prostitutes, habitués of gin palaces and prisoners. A terrific companion while reading Boz himself.” ―Kirkus

“Flanders (The Invention of Murder) successfully recreates the feel of London at Dickens's peak as she delves deep into the rhythms and architecture of particular neighborhoods…. Flanders's expertise shines when exposing Dickens's embellishments, particularly when his character Fagin faces execution rather than the less powerful but more realistic punishment of deportment. This well-researched sociological overview provides highly detailed context for cultural touchstones, while shattering the popular yet inauthentic image of a pristine Victorian age that never existed.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Outstanding.” ―Sunday Times (London)

“The teeming, bustling, hand-to-mouth and often smelly facts of mid-19th century urban life have seldom been more vividly presented than in this book.” ―Literary Review

“With infectious enthusiasm Judith Flanders dives into the sights, smells, sounds and grit of what was then the largest city the world had ever known: London.” ―Sunday Telegraph (London)

“Full of detail and colour about everyday life in Dickens's London, and leaves you with a sense not only of how hard life was then, but how strange. Even if you've read Dickens and the contemporary historians of the poor, there is still more to marvel at here.” ―Sebastian Faulks, Mail on Sunday Books of the Year (London)

“A quite extraordinary book, which I read with much enjoyment: an intoxicating blend of London, life and literature... I think it's Judith Flanders' best book yet, which is saying something.” ―Andrew Taylor

“Meticulous and gripping... Flanders says that Dickens appealed to contemporaries because he gave them a voyage into the unknown: into parts of London they did not know and where they would not venture. She does something similar for us. The strangeness remains, but the voyage is unforgettable.” ―Independent (UK)

“Flanders captures the variety and colour of 19th-century London, stirring admiration and indignation by turns. To lead us through the Victorian capital, through its hustle and sprawl, its dangers and entertainments, you couldn't hope for a better guide.” ―New Statesman (UK)

“Recreates the textures of everyday life with an anthropologist's understanding of human behaviour alongside a storyteller's eye for character.” ―Daily Telegraph (UK)

The Victorian City
By S Riaz
Having looked at the Victorian house, Victorian crime and Victorian leisure in previous books, the author now turns her attention to the Victorian city. In particular, London during the time of Dickens', using his journalism and novels to illustrate her own book. Judith Flanders makes an important point that today the word 'Dickensian' often refers to squalor - such as the term 'Dickensian conditions' - whereas in his own time the author was more often seen as convivial and often humorous. As anyone will know who has read any biography of the great man, what Dickens was, more than anything, was an observer of his city and his people. In this book, Flanders attempts to create a picture of London during that time and to show the differences and similarilities with now.

One of the main impressions I came away with from the book is that London was much busier then than our present time - if that is possible! When the author recreates the working day, it showed that even in the middle of the night people were trudging around, either going to work or returning from it. Another major difference is that most people walked fairly long distances to get to and from places. In her section about the city itself, she covers all elements, from the methods of transport, accidents, commuting and even what the roads were surfaced in. She presents a place of immense noise and bustle, with street hawkers, markets, music and crowds, in which many of the inhabitants complained of never having any peace from the constant roar of the streets.

Other sections of the book look at how people lived, enjoyed themselves and the city at night. I learnt that markets and public houses had to close during church services, something I had not been aware of before, and a whole host of other interesting and informative facts. London during Dickens' time was always on the move. As the population increased, slum dwellings (or rookery's) began to grow, with workhouses and prisons visible presences in the city. Poverty led to many ingenious ways to make things cheapest for the very poorest. Public houses had a 'saveall' to collect dregs from glasses to be sold cheaply, or given away, for instance. My very favourite was the fact that you could have newspapers delivered, or 'rent' them - if that was too expensive for you, you could rent the previous days paper for an even cheaper price. Still, the author looks carefully at the poverty and injustice Dickens' was famous for exposing and also looks at life expectancy, public water pumps, illness and epidemics and the links between crime and poverty.

London was not always so dark and depressing and her vivid descriptions of London at night, with public houses, theatres, street organs, parks and public spaces are fascinating. I have lived in London all my life, but was never aware of the work on Trafalgar Square, for instance, which went on for so long that hardly anybody could muster any enthusiasm when the lions were finally installed - only a handful of men witnessing they arrival in the capital. There are interesting digressions into royalty, food, street violence and fascinating accounts of public executions. For Dickens' his city was a place that encompassed all life, and leaving London and leaving life one and the same. Flanders does a wonderful job of recreating that time and of relating it always to Dickens' London and his work. If you have an interest in Victorian London or the work of Charles Dickens, this will be a must read. Lastly, I read the kindle edition of this book and it contained illustrations.

Encyclopedia of London streets in Dickens' day
By Free Range Clickin'
I wish this book had a different title. It's all about life in and on the *streets* of Dickens' London. The author's purpose is stated in the Introduction: "to look at the streets of London as Dickens and his fellow Londoners saw it, to examine its workings, to take a walk, in effect, through the city as it appeared in Dickens' lifetime, from 1812 to 1870." We rarely get indoors.

Each chapter - almost each page - bristles with detail. This is a wonderful reference book. As a straight-through read, I found it challenging, because I was soon feeling swamped by the sheer amount of information. To fully process all of that I'll have to read it again, but only a bit at a sitting. That said, I enjoyed most her descriptions of the development of the city's infrastructure - streets, roads, lighting, sewers, the Embankment.

There's an encyclopedic knowledge on display in each chapter of this book, and much to learn. Few who visit today's London know that several rivers run through it, but have long been buried deep under its streets and buildings. I wasn't surprised to read the details of a devastating fire at the wharves, or of huge public gatherings for events ranging from said fire to the state funeral of the Duke of Wellington. It was a revelation, however, to learn of the elaborate public illuminations: public buildings, shops, and even private homes were adorned with gaslit decorations for the enjoyment of vast night time crowds, to mark special occasions. Those are just a few of the subjects Flanders examines; if I tried to touch on all of them I'd have to write an unbearably long review.

Throughout the more than 400 pages of text (there are about 100 pages of end notes), Flanders frequently ties the details of the present subject, with Dickens' life and works. This attention to her theme provides welcome relief from the feeling I sometimes had, that I was reading an encyclopedia.

Although I don't live there and can't visit often, one of my favorite things ever is to spend a day walking in London. Any book whose purpose is to explain what Dickens saw on his lifetime's worth of walks through London - night and day - has a permanent place in my bookcase. I'll be picking this one up again and again, for reference and for browsing. It's a bit much to read all at one go, though.

Well Done, Judith Flanders, Well Done..
By Ms Winston
Who hasn't a one point or another longed to go back in time to visit the actual place where a favorite author set his most popular works? I know that I have at various times want to go back to see the London of Charles Dickens, or to move forward a decade or two, the London of Sherlock Holmes. Since as far as we know time travel is not possible, I recommend Ms Flanders' book on the Victorian city as the next best thing (and probably a whole lot safer, as well).

Each chapter has a theme for our travel adventure -- food, water-borne diseases, transportation, the generally miserable lives of children put to work when they are hardly out of their nappies, street walkers, shop keepers, and royalty. The book is an excellent resource for the casual reader and the scholar alike, as Ms Flanders has included copious notes and a bibliography. The book did not have quite as many illustrations as I had hoped for, although there were some throughout the text. I have read other books that I think did a slightly better job of involving the reader more totally in the time period, such as "The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England", by Ian Mortimer. The Mortimer book had more of a laser-like focus on one particular subject per chapter, where Flanders sometimes seemed to go off on tangents. Both methods have their merits, and sometimes it is just a matter of what style appeals to the reader at a given moment.

At over 400 pages the Flanders book is a commitment of time, but, as is often the case in books of this type, it is possible to read a chapter or two, set the book aside for a few days, and then come back to it without losing the context. I know many people, including myself, who often read large non-fiction books in this manner, and this book in particular lends itself to that method. If the subject matter interests you, do not hesitate to dive right into this exploration of Dickens' London.

I absolutely loved this book. It was as fun to read as the title suggests and informative as well. It brought back to my memory days of my rambunctious youth, and painted a picture of the settings beautifull in my head. I would give it all five stars, but it does seem to be lagging in some places. Overall it is a good read that is really worth every penny.

"Excellent, clearly presented information and theories. Would expand students' minds in the area of the classics and help develop an understanding of the basics of communication."--Doris D. Phillips, University of Mississippi

"A classic in the field of composition studies, a work that has shaped the discipline. Sorts out the often confusing writings of classical rhetoric and shows how the ancient art can help contemporary students negotiate the realm of persuasive discourse."--Gary Layne Hatch, Brigham Young University

"Remains the essential practice-oriented text in the field, and the third edition has avoided the temptation to 'modernize' away its primary purpose and value."--Patrick Scott, University of South Carolina

"Corbett's work is very readable and has generous excerpts from various rhetoric sources; the integration of classical rhetoric with contemporary approaches is of particular appeal."--Sr. Marie Brinkman, Saint Mary College

"I am now using this text....I think it is superb and have ever since I was first introduced to it as a new graduate teaching assistant myself in 1983....I need a text like this to introduce classical rhetoric, as I believe it to be the backbone of all writing courses."--Jerri Williams, West Texas State University

"Not only is this a widely respected text, but I enjoy using it because it enables me to involve students in modern rhetorical issues--making clear the ways media, institutions, and individals use language to influence their beliefs, attitudes and behavior--as well as impress them with the historical tradition of the analysis and practice they have just begun."--Sam McCool, Carlow College

Cogent college rhetoric textbook
By Joe
I read this book twice now. I focused on every single page and made sure I understood to the best of my ability the meaning of what Corbett was writing. The exception to this being that I couldn't get through the tougher section on syllogisms and enthymemes, and also the history of rhetoric in the back of the book was too dull for me.

That said, I would recommend this book (if not the newer 1990 4th edition, but I've never read that version) to my family, friends, strangers. Anyone who wants to understand, be understood; write, speak, and think better should get the book.

I spent sometimes an hour on single pages because my critical thinking and rhetorical skills were so low. They don't teach these two things to the average student at public schools in America. This book was a blessing, and, man, it was difficult! To paraphrase, the more difficult you fight to earn something, the more rewarding that something will be. So don't be fooled in thinking you'll just learn a lot, you have to earn it to learn it.

Sticking it out and reading the whole thing, twice made me a better person. It's my faverite book next to the Bible, which is literally where it is right now.

How to analyze and order your thoughts, and express them effectively
By Paul Vitols
This college textbook, first published in 1965, is much more than a mere aid for students trying to learn how to come up with essay topics and then how to write the essay; it is a labor of love, even a cri de coeur, by a man who wants to revive the ancient and much-examined art of rhetoric. This book can be studied with great profit by anyone who wants to write effectively.

The author breaks his text into five parts:

1. an Introduction, in which he defines rhetoric and presents examples of effective discourse, ancient and modern
2. the Discovery of Arguments, or formulating your thesis and finding persuasive points for supporting it
3. the Arrangement of Material, or how to present your points in an effective way
4. Style, and examination of sentences, diction, usage, and figures of speech
5. and a concluding Survey of Rhetoric, in which the author gives a brief history of rhetoric as it has affected English prose

Each of these sections is filled with interesting and useful material. As might be expected, the core classical text for this book is Aristotle’s Rhetoric, but Corbett draws freely on other sources as well, including Quintilian, Cicero, Longinus, and many others. The ability to speak persuasively in public was a key skill for the citizen of an ancient city-state, and over the centuries this skill became thoroughly examined and analyzed by the best minds of the period.

Speaking for myself, as someone who was born with significant writing talent, who has written professionally since 1978, and who has written millions of words in a variety of formats and genres, I learned a lot from each section of this book. When I was in school, writing was not taught with anything like this level of depth, rigor, or precision.

Corbett’s text treats rhetoric as an art—but an art in the Aristotelian sense. From this point of view, it is a knowledge of principles that elevates a knack into an art. This book is concerned with the principles of effective writing: the skeleton, flesh, and skin of a persuasive or moving discourse.

Following Aristotle, Corbett presents the “three modes of persuasion”—the so-called rational, emotional, and moral arguments. The rational argument makes its appeal to our reason by the use of logic; the emotional argument makes its appeal to our feelings; and the moral argument makes its appeal based on our perception of the speaker or writer as a person. Interestingly, Aristotle felt that this last was the most persuasive appeal of the three; we are most inclined to accept the argument of someone that we like and admire. These three modes of persuasion permeate all the specific strategies and techniques presented in the rest of the book.

Corbett gives the reader lots of work to do along the way. I did most of it, and still felt I was only making the very first beginnings. He has you analyzing Aristotelian syllogisms; breaking down sample discourses into their component topics or specific argumentative strategies; breaking down more discourses into their structural components; even copying individual paragraphs written by excellent writers of the past—that’s right, copying them out longhand, as you might have done early in grade-school, to absorb some of the stylistic prowess of the author.

Along the way you’ll read a lot of excellent writing by authors such as Pericles, Samuel Johnson, Thomas Jefferson, Matthew Arnold, and many others. Furthermore, you’ll read them in an alert, critical way that you might not in any other context. The individual paragraphs he gets you to copy will take you all the way from the King James Bible to Edmund Wilson, by way of Thomas Hobbes, Daniel Defoe, Edward Gibbon, Washington Irving, Walter Bagehot, and Mark Twain—again, among many others.

As long as there are human beings and speech, there will be rhetoric. Perhaps my greatest takeaway from this book is the realization of how poorly and sloppily I use language for the most part, and how poorly and sloppily others do as well, even when they really don’t want to. Now I can glance at a letter to the editor, see the topics and appeals used, and note how successful, or rather how unsuccessful, they are.

Friends, we’re all rhetorical flops. Are you satisfied with that condition? If not, there’s a remedy. It’s this book. Get it, read it, work it. Let’s become citizens in the full sense.

Pinter and the Theater of the Absurd
By John F. Rooney
In "The Birthday Party" sixtyish batty Meg and husband Petey live in a past-its-prime British seaside resort and run a seedy boarding house which has only one guest, a strange loner named Stanley whom Meg has grown too fond of. Two mysterious ill-boding strangers, Goldberg and McCann, show up and decide to give Stanley a birthday party when it isn't even his birthday. Lulu is a young neighbor who visits and regrets it. A toy drum becomes a disquieting prop.
Pinter, child of Beckett, sets up a bizarre situation. All of the people are weird, kooky, save Petey, and their behavior becomes grotesque. The party goes badly awry and gets into scary territory.
This is early Pinter, not top-drawer, in which he is groping his way toward the Pinteresque theater of the Absurd. He toned down his antics in some of his later, better works like "The Homecoming."
A Pinter play frequently presents:
1. Round-the-bend, barely functional, often disreputable characters living on the fringes of society, some criminal types
2. Commonplace, prosaic dialogue that is often funny, satiric, inane and Absurdist
3. A sense of nameless terror and menace, pending violence, a mystery, the surreal, and the unexpected
4. Often the motivation of some characters is unclear. We see people who are barely able to make it. Are they dumb, out of it, or puppets on a string?
Pinter keeps you interested by the plot. Where is he leading me? Why are these people doing these things? Nothing seems earthshaking
You step into his askew world and you're asking for trouble, and if you're adventurous, you are enjoying being toyed with.
Part of the charm of Pinter are his enigmatic plots. They're fun because he's going to tease you, to make you wonder.
This is a clever play, funny, off-beat and Absurdist, but not really much else. He's showing off, proving that he can pull off a stunt, but does it take a master dramatist just to play games? In this 1958 play one can see touches of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Albee's 1962 classic. Pinter was extremely influential.
