His explanations of Hindu puranas and iconography is likely the most understandable I've come across. It's not an easy task to relate this stuff to modern Western sensibilities, but he does a commendable job. Easily recommended if one wants a solid perspective on Shiva and Shakti.

About the Author
Lian Zhen was born in Canton, China, and started sketching and painting when he was 10 years old. He received a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992 and his Masters degree in Architecture from MIT in 1996. His art teaching experience includes eight years at the University of California at Berkeley, where he taught watercolor outdoor sketching. Another excellent book by Lian Zhen

Lian Zhen has again written another excellent book on traditional Chinese painting techniques and his unique style of merging Chinese painting methods with western watercolor. This book will provide hours of instruction and inspiration for all levels of artists - from beginner to advanced. The book includes detailed information about materials, basic techniques, Chinese painting composition, 13 flower demonstrations, and 4 experimental Chinese painting techniques. Eight of the 13 flower demonstrations include step-by-step instructions for both Chinese and western watercolor methods so one can compare and contrast the two methods. The book, like Lian Zhen's seminars, will assit you to find and develop your style as a painter.

This book not only takes some of the mystery out of chinese brush painting, but also explains the philosophy behind the beautiful work. It is most helpfull to those of us who paint impressionistic watercolors in the western style and are trying to free ourselves of overpainting with too much detail ie. to find and paint "the essence." A great book!

Applied Spatial Data Analysis with R, Second Edition, is divided into two basic parts, the first presenting R packages, functions, classes and methods for handling spatial data. This part is of interest to users who need to access and visualise spatial data. Data import and export for many file formats for spatial data are covered in detail, as is the interface between R and the open source GRASS GIS and the handling of spatio-temporal data. The second part showcases more specialised kinds of spatial data analysis, including spatial point pattern analysis, interpolation and geostatistics, areal data analysis and disease mapping. The coverage of methods of spatial data analysis ranges from standard techniques to new developments, and the examples used are largely taken from the spatial statistics literature. All the examples can be run using R contributed packages available from the CRAN website, with code and additional data sets from the book's own website. Compared to the first edition, the second edition covers the more systematic approach towards handling spatial data in R, as well as a number of important and widely used CRAN packages that have appeared since the first edition.

This book will be of interest to researchers who intend to use R to handle, visualise, and analyse spatial data. It will also be of interest to spatial data analysts who do not use R, but who are interested in practical aspects of implementing software for spatial data analysis. This is not a book for a beginner, but is an excellent book for two groups of readers: those who have some background with R and wish to learn about its capabilities for spatial statistics; and those with some background in spatial statistics who wish to learn how to use R. The authors have been the main developers of the spatial statistics packages on R, and therefore know the packages intimately. But the authors also have a deep knowledge of the spatial statistics literature, and I found myself learning something new about these methods in every chapter. Everyone serious about spatial statistics should see what R has to offer. This book is the easiest way to do that.

The R spatial packages are the leading edge for spatial analysis and spatial statistics. This book, by the primary developers of the R Spatial packages, is the best introduction to the subject that I have seen.

Now, if you are comfortable with it, you can dive an and download R and R spatial and go to town. But if you need some help, this is a good place to start. This would also make a good textbook for a class on spatial analysis.

Just what is needed

This book fills a gap in the Spatial Statistics literature. Most of the treatises are heavy on the math, and I find it difficult to bridge the gap between the formulas and applying them. The modules for R take care of this for you and leave you to interpret the result. This book covers most of these modules and demonstrates how to use them. Really worth getting. There is also the ESRI Guide to GIS Analysis Vol 2, but it is more of an introductory text.

Practical common sense for success in retail business

I had read the original version of this book maybe twenty years ago and have spoken of it very often, but unfortunately I lent it out and lost track of mine a while back. This copy is a newly revised version.

I really concur with Julian Richer's focus on motivating people, both staff and customers. His methods boil down to honesty and respect. Simply put, this works. The competition for increasing business and revenue is easier to win if you do not obviously play selling games and in so doing actually skew the truth to your customers. They end up with mixed feelings about their purchase, or worse.

Where staff are concerned, if you train and explain the rules and keep rewarding the right behaviour you end up with more satisfied and dedicated staff. His lack of turnover in staff is a testament to this. Plus the outstanding results in sales shows that his methods do lead to results.

Delicious food, awesome bands. Two great tastes that taste great together.

I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting when I ordered this book - well, aside from interesting recipes from some of my favorite bands.

But I will admit, the recipes are interesting - and I've learned about some bands I've never heard of before, as well as some rather unusual dishes - the most unusual being "Candied Sweetbreads on a Bed of Seared Heart", provided by GWAR member Balzac The Jaws Of Death. (Be warned, though, the term sweetbreads has absolutely nothing to do with baked goods!)

You've got some dishes that would be considered traditional metalhead food in here: Incinerator Chicken Wings, the Fried Egg Rigor Mortis Cure, BBQ Pork Ribs, Mummified Jalapeno Bacon Bombs, and Welfare Nachos, to name a few.

Then you've got some fancy dishes, the kind you wouldn't expect to find at a metalhead gathering (good examples include the recipes for Sunday Brunch Lamb Roast, Prawn Bisque, and Roast Beef with Green Beans).

You've also got dishes from other countries - Roti Jala for one, Marinated Hermelin Cheese for another, and Whisky Demon Bacalao for a third.

Thus far, I've not tried many of the recipes in the book owing to lack of time, but those I've tried have turned out excellent.

The book itself has some decent weight to it, and the pages are glossy and thick - in my opinion, perfect for when you need to refer to it while cooking, as spills and splatters wipe off easily and don't get a chance to soak in. In addition, Annick Giroux's "Morbid Chef Notes" provide some valuable tips and insights into how best to cook the dishes in this book.

If you like cooking and you love heavy metal, you'll likely enjoy this book. (You may even enjoy it even if you DON'T like heavy metal!)

I wanted this book because I thought it would be kitschy and funny.
It is both of those, but it's also a badass collection of international recipes. Everything I've made from this book so far has been nothing short of fantastic.

This thing is ridiculously well-planned and simple. Every recipe has a beautiful picture and band bio, plus Annick (after making each recipe) added her own notes and tips.

Hellbent for Cooking is great, meaty deliciousness, and I love it.
