No ConnectMath access code

The price point is as great as any other amazon textbook. I bought a hardcover because my University book store only sells a paperback that is UNBOUND (what??) and I figured it was a waste of money to buy something that requires a binder. I figured buying this hardcover for $20 more I would get everything the paper copy had and then some.. I was wrong. If your University requires you to get the ConnectMath membership, this book doesn't include it (a $100 value). So I had to return. Hopefully this will be helpful for you as none of the reviews had this as a comment.

The probability of you liking this book?

I enjoyed and appreciated how clear and concise the info is. It made learning statistics easier than I thought.

However... the theme of this book goes like this: Read about a subject relating to statistics/probability, read one simple example, followed by a solution, which is then followed by one MAYBE two practice questions and then move right along to another new subject. The next subject is somewhat of what you just learned, with something new added to it. This cycle continues until you become a little lost and confused.
Yes, there are some practice questions at the chapters end (review questions) but its not enough! Repetition is key to learning this stuff. Only answers for the odd numbered questions are in the back, but they are just answers, no solution is written or drawn out. Its so frustrating to spend upwards of 20 minutes on one problem only to see the incorrect answer with no clue on what you did wrong.

Seems to be considerably worse than its competitors

I'm teaching out of this book this semester, having previously taught out of Perloff and Pindyck, and so far am unimpressed. It seems heavy on cutesy/flowery/chatty language, and light on substance.

Illustratively, consider their treatment of welfare calculations (Ch. 3) versus the treatments in Pindyck and Perloff (both Ch. 9). Goolsbee et al spend a lot of time belaboring the mechanical details of the graphical welfare model without giving particularly good insight. You won't leave Chapter 3 confused on how to solve for the area of a triangle, but they fail to mention key interesting limitations when using the graphical model, like the fact that when you have a price ceiling and excess demand, the model implies that those who value the good most highly will be those who procure it, but this is actually a relatively strong assumption. Both Perloff and Pindyck discuss this, and leaving it out will create confusion for the students who have a higher level of understanding. It's ultimately not a huge issue if it were isolated, but I have found so far that there are many similar problems with insufficient (or even substantively incorrect) coverage of topics in the book.

Another example is their treatment of price floors. They seem to assume when doing the welfare analysis that magically producers will limit their supply, but the text indicates that peanut producers actually are unable to find buyers. It seems better to include the DWL from waste, or be clear on what is actually happening in this market otherwise. Pindyck in particular has an excellent treatment of this topic which is far less confusing and actually teaches the students something about how agricultural price supports tend to work.

Also - you would think given its Freakonomics roots, the examples would be more entertaining than other intro micro books, but that hasn't yet seemed to be the case.

Good intro book about the subject

I never had any exposure to microeconomics before and the book was very helpful (alongside the class, of course) in having a good understanding on how our world works.

I have only 2 complaints: the solutions given are for about 20% of the problem sets (how do you cross check if you actually understood the concepts if you don't know what is right or wrong 80% of the time?), and sometimes I think it is too wordy. Every graph has at least 1 full page describing in baby steps what is going on, I usually could get to the point with less than a paragraph. This is quite annoying since there is lot of material to read, and a good part of it is redundant.

Too expensive for a college textbook, though good quality.

This first college edition textbook for Intermediate Microeconomics is good, I give it that. It does a decent job in taking a topic that is mind-numbingly confusing and making it marginally understandable.

However, it's only slightly better than Intermediate Microeconomics: A Modern Approach (Eighth Edition) by Hal R. Varian, who also does as good a job as can be expected of explaining the same mind-numbing material. This title only wins the "slightly better" endorsement because of the prettier graphics and more frequent side-notes. However, the concepts are EXACTLY the same, only slightly differing examples with fewer pictures in the Varian version.

Considering the astronomical difference in price, this sparkly new title just isn't worth it. How are students supposed to afford this? Unless your professor makes this title absolutely mandatory, I say go with the Varian book instead. You will learn all the exact same things, and save yourself a lot of $$$.

Exhilarating Insight to the World of Child-Centered Biblical Studies.

“The necessity of children for communal survival in the ancient world stand in contrast with the compulsory restriction of children’s value to the emotional realm that has come to dominate modern Western culture.” (154)

Give Me Children or I Shall Die (henceforth I Shall Die) is the revised thesis of Laurel W. Koepf-Taylor. In it she seeks to “to contribute yet another perspective to the growing breadth of exegetical voices” through “child-centered interpretation” (12). In doing this Koepf-Taylor seeks to “help scholars avoid projecting anachronistic assumptions onto the ancient texts” (12). Despite this lofty goal, I Shall Die is simple to read given Koepf-Taylor’s lucid writing (even when provocative).

I Shall Die accomplishes everything Koepf-Taylor seeks by addressing an “overview of the social history of childhood” (chapter 1) (13), “(in)fertility as a frequent trope throughout the Hebrew Bible” (chapter 2) (43), “evidence [of] a preoccupation with the education/enculturation of children” (chapter 3) (43) and finally a “biblical rhetoric of child death…in the Hebrew Bible differs from the modern moral rhetoric of childhood suffering and protection” (chapter 4) (44). Each chapter builds upon the last providing thorough insights into child-centered texts.

In the opening chapter, Koepf-Taylor’s overview starts fiercely when she claims much “classic research…naturalizes Western constructions of childhood, suggesting that its claims are universal” (21). Crucial to this perception is the alteration of how children were viewed after Romanticism (24-33). Mark 10:15 exemplifies how these profoundly different view of children impact how Biblical texts involving children should be read (34). Chapter two applies these insights to the important theme of fertility and infertility. Koepf-Taylor proscribes modern focus on “the parents’ ‘sense of immortality’ rather than their immediate survival” (50) as one of the reasons why this “family subject” (49) is often read with anachronistic assumptions. Instead, tied directly to the infertility themes of the Old Testament is “the economic necessity of childbearing” (54). This has fascinating application to levirate marriage (54-55), the book of Ruth (55-56), the story of Hannah (62-64) and circumcision (69-73).

In chapter Three Koepf-Taylor addresses “The Value of Education and Enculturation” (chapter title). Modern education is portrayed as focusing on “succeeding[ing] in future careers” (86) whereas the Hebrew Bible “emphasize[s] the urgency of passing down tradition” (86) often times for “communal rather than individual benefit” (87). This has absorbing conclusions for communities in exile and their cultural survival (91-94). These implications lead into one of the more interesting evaluations of the Biblical texts (Deut 6:7; Exo 12-13; Psa 78) throughout I Shall Die (94-112). Conservative individuals unfamiliar with exilic redaction theories may disagree with Koepf-Taylor’s methods but her conclusions on cross-generational teaching models are thought provoking and insightful.

In chapter four, Koepf-Taylor speaks to the rhetoric of child rejection and death found throughout the Scriptures (in particular the prophets). Before focusing on the Biblical texts the modern child rhetoric of child innocence is evaluated (116-122). It is here that some of the most provocative and poignant portions of I Shall Die rise to the surface. Withholding no critical evaluation, Koepf-Taylor notes that “child protection is a fantasy of adult and parental omnipotence” that is the derivative of “irrational belief” (120). This modern paradigm makes it hard to understand the Hebrew Bible as “purposefully threatening” to children as a threat to “cultural and communal survival” (120). This concept is then poured into enthralling investigation of the familial-spousal language of Lamentations (126-130), Jeremiah 3 (132-139), Hosea (139-143) as well as the general themes of Jeremiah, Isaiah and Ezekiel (143-147). Along with the introduction, this discussion completely justifies the cost of I Shall Die (which as a thesis is admittedly high).

In conclusion, Give Me Children or I Shall Die is a captivating introduction to child studies and their application to the Scriptures. More theological conclusions would have been beneficial while evaluating the Old Testament prophets but also would have largely expanded the focus of the thesis. The insights of a child-oriented account of the ancient world upon the Biblical texts are weighty and hermeneutically challenging. Valuable to scholars, pastors and those generally interested, Give Me Children or I Shall Die is fantastic.

Dishonest Journalist

I have read this bio, among various others on the fascinating subject of HP Blavatsky, and I have to say that this is the second worst one I have seen. The worst is Madame Blavatsky's Baboon, which is awful. But they both share the same quality - lack of journalistic integrity. I have personally checked this bio against original sources that she quotes from and found her to embellish, omit important information, distort and outright fabricate. She clearly is more interested in selling books (according to her guess about what would sell best) rather than the truth. Looking at some of the reviews of some of her other books such as the Buster Keaton bio, this seems to be a pattern. She looks to be an author who has a tendency to write superficial, factually inaccurate, contrived books aimed at sales and sensationalism. And for someone with the professed orientation of being feminist, she missed a great opportunity to authentically appreciate a 19th-century original. To quote another reviewer of one of Meade's other biographies, why write a bio about someone you obviously don't like?

Robin moves from boy to man wonder as he takes the guise of grown-up crime fighter Nightwing in this origin story. Nightwing's fans will enjoy the exploration of what made him who he is. The story starts with the break between Batman and his sidekick, a result of Robin's conflicting responsibilities: to college; his supergroup, the Teen Titans; and Batman himself. The rest of the story follows Dick Grayson's journey to becoming Nightwing. The narration laid on top of the story, coming from an older and wiser Grayson, adds emotional resonance to the events. The tensions between Batman and his young protégé are nicely portrayed, as are Grayson's feelings of regret and bitterness following the break. Finally, Nightwing confronts the new Robin, Jason Todd, revealing a good deal about the character and his changing self-image. The tale's episodic quality occasionally drains its energy as Grayson's encounters with a circus lion, the Joker and Batgirl aren't always intimately involved with his changing character, but the story pulls through, arriving at satisfying confrontations between Nightwing and the most important characters in his life. Grade 6 Up–This graphic novel recounts the coming-of-age of Batmans sidekick Dick Grayson as he makes the transition from child to adult and from Robin to Nightwing. When he is fired for neglecting his duties, he first seeks guidance from Superman and then solace in his former life as a circus performer. Meanwhile, Batman is training a new Robin to take his place. Eventually an exercise gone wrong brings the two Robins together, and they must put aside their rivalry in order to rescue Alfred after he is mistakenly identified as Two Face. This story is mainly about the struggle of a young man trying to establish his own identity, and his attempt to define himself as his own superhero will appeal to teens. It is clearly set in todays world; Nightwing wears a hoodie, Batman must rescue a child kidnapped in a custody dispute, and a villain is caught because he decided to purchase an economy car rather than a gas-guzzling SUV. The artwork is clear and propels the story dynamically across the pages. The books engaging quality gives it appeal even to those who are not comic-book aficionados.–Heather M. Lisowski, Philip S. Great story, Great characters, Great adventure! GREAT!

This is a must have for Robin/Nightwing fans. The story fills in some great details on Dick's transition from "Boy Wonder" to "Man Wonder".

Every character has their own voice and familiar characterization. Dick is brave and resourceful, Alfred is caring, Batman is callous and Jason Todd is a brat. The linear nature of the story is wonderful, not wasting time in re-caps and histories, but going forward with a great adventure.

The only drawback is the blocky, cartoony nature of the artwork, but the story is so well-written you hardly notice it.

Nightwing: A Refreshingly Different Read

I am, and will probably always be, a Batman fan first and foremost. However, Nightwing brings an attitude, style, and level of action to the comics that is very entertaining. He is very different from his mentor. Sometimes this is good, sometimes bad.

For instance, I see Nightwing as more reckless than Batman. Batman always has a plan within a plan within a plan. Nightwing is also a clever and careful person, but he is not afraid to get his hands dirty in an all-out brawl.

Second, Nightwing has a sense of humor. Not gonna find that with Batman.

Third, however, Nightwing just seems more consistent. Nightwing is a lot more like Dick Grayson, where Batman is nothing like Bruce Wayne. This creates a continuity of character in the Nightwing series.

Nightwing has left behind the Robin role, left the Titans, and now focused his eyes upon Bludhaven. Eventually, he will become the protector of Bludhaven as Batman is the protector of Gotham. He even has an antagonist who is his perfect spoil- the Blockbuster.

Nightwing: Year One introduces us to a character who will take a path different from the one of his mentor.

The Prototype Year One Story

There comes a time when all Robins must leave the nest and fly solo, in this case taking flight under the name Nightwing. Yes it's a painful cliché but so apropos. Parting can be such sweet sorrow, but Dick Grayson needed to become his own man and the time was now. The evolution of Robin to NW was a long time coming, Nightwing being one of the best characters DC has created in years. Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty bucked the trend of disappointing Year One stories as the two take us on a whirlwind "This is your life" journey from past to present connecting his pre-Batman days with his current status quo. He first travels to Metropolis for a heart to heart with his former World's Finest buddy Superman, then on to the circus of his childhood, which also includes a visit from the mysterious Deadman. Of course no Dick Grayson story would be complete without Barbara Gordon, the love of his life and occasional crime fighting partner. Their relationship is a joy to read and one of the more poignant portrayals in comics. We are finally brought full circle and a bit of future shock with his encounter with Jason Todd. Sorry Dick, no one is irreplaceable. The dialogue is sharp and characterizations spot on. Naturally Batman has to play the heavy as a means of triggering the story to begin with. So despite some friction, this cast is one big but not necessarily happy Batfamily, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

These are the best books for our home school unit studies

These are the best books for our home school unit studies. I don't do all the projects but to pick several and they are easy and not a lot of special supplies. It is a wonderful supplement to any home school family to add an element of "fun" to learning history. We have really enjoyed this series!
