Robin moves from boy to man wonder as he takes the guise of grown-up crime fighter Nightwing in this origin story. Nightwing's fans will enjoy the exploration of what made him who he is. The story starts with the break between Batman and his sidekick, a result of Robin's conflicting responsibilities: to college; his supergroup, the Teen Titans; and Batman himself. The rest of the story follows Dick Grayson's journey to becoming Nightwing. The narration laid on top of the story, coming from an older and wiser Grayson, adds emotional resonance to the events. The tensions between Batman and his young protégé are nicely portrayed, as are Grayson's feelings of regret and bitterness following the break. Finally, Nightwing confronts the new Robin, Jason Todd, revealing a good deal about the character and his changing self-image. The tale's episodic quality occasionally drains its energy as Grayson's encounters with a circus lion, the Joker and Batgirl aren't always intimately involved with his changing character, but the story pulls through, arriving at satisfying confrontations between Nightwing and the most important characters in his life. Grade 6 Up–This graphic novel recounts the coming-of-age of Batmans sidekick Dick Grayson as he makes the transition from child to adult and from Robin to Nightwing. When he is fired for neglecting his duties, he first seeks guidance from Superman and then solace in his former life as a circus performer. Meanwhile, Batman is training a new Robin to take his place. Eventually an exercise gone wrong brings the two Robins together, and they must put aside their rivalry in order to rescue Alfred after he is mistakenly identified as Two Face. This story is mainly about the struggle of a young man trying to establish his own identity, and his attempt to define himself as his own superhero will appeal to teens. It is clearly set in todays world; Nightwing wears a hoodie, Batman must rescue a child kidnapped in a custody dispute, and a villain is caught because he decided to purchase an economy car rather than a gas-guzzling SUV. The artwork is clear and propels the story dynamically across the pages. The books engaging quality gives it appeal even to those who are not comic-book aficionados.–Heather M. Lisowski, Philip S. Great story, Great characters, Great adventure! GREAT!

This is a must have for Robin/Nightwing fans. The story fills in some great details on Dick's transition from "Boy Wonder" to "Man Wonder".

Every character has their own voice and familiar characterization. Dick is brave and resourceful, Alfred is caring, Batman is callous and Jason Todd is a brat. The linear nature of the story is wonderful, not wasting time in re-caps and histories, but going forward with a great adventure.

The only drawback is the blocky, cartoony nature of the artwork, but the story is so well-written you hardly notice it.

Nightwing: A Refreshingly Different Read

I am, and will probably always be, a Batman fan first and foremost. However, Nightwing brings an attitude, style, and level of action to the comics that is very entertaining. He is very different from his mentor. Sometimes this is good, sometimes bad.

For instance, I see Nightwing as more reckless than Batman. Batman always has a plan within a plan within a plan. Nightwing is also a clever and careful person, but he is not afraid to get his hands dirty in an all-out brawl.

Second, Nightwing has a sense of humor. Not gonna find that with Batman.

Third, however, Nightwing just seems more consistent. Nightwing is a lot more like Dick Grayson, where Batman is nothing like Bruce Wayne. This creates a continuity of character in the Nightwing series.

Nightwing has left behind the Robin role, left the Titans, and now focused his eyes upon Bludhaven. Eventually, he will become the protector of Bludhaven as Batman is the protector of Gotham. He even has an antagonist who is his perfect spoil- the Blockbuster.

Nightwing: Year One introduces us to a character who will take a path different from the one of his mentor.

The Prototype Year One Story

There comes a time when all Robins must leave the nest and fly solo, in this case taking flight under the name Nightwing. Yes it's a painful cliché but so apropos. Parting can be such sweet sorrow, but Dick Grayson needed to become his own man and the time was now. The evolution of Robin to NW was a long time coming, Nightwing being one of the best characters DC has created in years. Chuck Dixon and Scott Beatty bucked the trend of disappointing Year One stories as the two take us on a whirlwind "This is your life" journey from past to present connecting his pre-Batman days with his current status quo. He first travels to Metropolis for a heart to heart with his former World's Finest buddy Superman, then on to the circus of his childhood, which also includes a visit from the mysterious Deadman. Of course no Dick Grayson story would be complete without Barbara Gordon, the love of his life and occasional crime fighting partner. Their relationship is a joy to read and one of the more poignant portrayals in comics. We are finally brought full circle and a bit of future shock with his encounter with Jason Todd. Sorry Dick, no one is irreplaceable. The dialogue is sharp and characterizations spot on. Naturally Batman has to play the heavy as a means of triggering the story to begin with. So despite some friction, this cast is one big but not necessarily happy Batfamily, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

These are the best books for our home school unit studies

These are the best books for our home school unit studies. I don't do all the projects but to pick several and they are easy and not a lot of special supplies. It is a wonderful supplement to any home school family to add an element of "fun" to learning history. We have really enjoyed this series!

About the Author
Williamson Murray is Professor Emeritus of History at the Ohio State University. He has also been the Centennial Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics, a Secretary of the Navy Fellow at the Navy War College, the Horner Professor of Military Theory at Marine Corps University, and the Harold Johnson Professor of Military History at the Army War College. At present he is a defense consultant and commentator on historical and military subjects in Washington, DC. Murray is co-editor of The Making of Peace (with Jim Lacey), The Past as Prologue (with Richard Hart Sinnreich), The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300-2050 (with MacGregor Knox), Military Innovation in the Interwar Period (with Allan R. Millett), and The Making of Strategy (with Alvin Bernstein and MacGregor Knox).

Richard Hart Sinnreich retired from the US Army in 1990. His active service included field artillery commands from battery through division artillery, combat in Vietnam, teaching at West Point and Fort Leavenworth, and assignments on the Army, Joint, and National Security Council staffs, as assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and as the first Army Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He helped establish and subsequently directed the Army's School of Advanced Military Studies, and has published widely in military and foreign affairs. Since retiring from the Army, he has worked as an independent defense consultant for both commercial clients and government agencies, and as the regular defense columnist for Lawton, Oklahoma's Sunday Constitution.

James Lacey has served more than a dozen years on active duty as an infantry officer and is recently retired from the army reserves. He is a widely published analyst and a Professor of Strategy at the Marine War College in Washington, DC, where he has written several studies on the war in Iraq and on the Global War on Terrorism. He also teaches graduate-level courses in military history and global issues at Johns Hopkins University. Lacey was an embedded journalist with Time magazine during the invasion of Iraq, during which he traveled with the 101st Airborne Division. He has written extensively for many other magazines, and his opinion columns have been published in National Review, the Weekly Standard, the New York Post, the New York Sun, Foreign Affairs and many other publications. He is the author of Takedown: the 3rd Infantry Division's 21-Day Assault on Baghdad, which has been hailed as 'a major and successful effort to fill in one of the major blank spots in our knowledge of Operation Iraqi Freedom'; Pershing (2008); and the forthcoming Keep from All Thoughtful Men (2011) and the co-editor of The Making of Peace (2008).

Outstanding (But This Is A Limited Review)

Note: This is a limited review because I purchased this book specifically for the interwar and WW II period, and do not comment here on the remainder of the book.

This ensemble book consists of essays by six eminent historians well familiar with their subject matter. My interest at this time is limited to the run up to WW II. The chapter entitled "British Grand Strategy, 1933-1942" by Dr Williamson Murray is simply brilliant.

Dr Murray has a rock-solid grasp of what grand strategy is, and the events, issues and British political leadership behaviors of the late interwar period. Equally important, he writes clear and cogent prose--a gift not many university professors can claim.

I particularly recommend reading this chapter to gain a quick and clear understanding of the brutal consequences of an ideological worldview that is unable to process obvious facts. The dangers of spinning world events to meet your worldview are manifest, and history provides examples aplenty.

Clearly essays of this length cannot possibly cover every aspect of grand strategy during the periods covered. Nonetheless, this book--at least the British Grand Strategy chapter--provides a useful and insightful overview with enough detail to satisfy. If you want to dive deeper, footnotes and references provide a wealth of resources for expanded study.

Dr Murray is professor emeritus of history at Ohio State University and has served as the Harold Johnson Professor of Military History at the US Army War College in Carlyle, PA. I have no connection to Dr Murray whatsoever, except as a reader and student of his writing.

I'm less impressed with the chapter on early WW II American grand strategy development, but I'm sure many will find it useful. Skimming the other chapters suggests their quality and clarity is similar to Dr Murray's chapter, but I have not studied them and cannot comment with assurance.

Worse, Britain did not provide a structure of government constitution which met the conflicting needs of Aden and the Protectorate. About the Author

John Ducker was in the British Overseas Civil Service in Aden and the Protectorate from 1960 to 1967, then moved to the World Bank.

Peter Hinchcliffe is an Honorary Fellow of Edinburgh University where he teaches Middle East History and Politics. He was with the British Overseas Civil Service in Aden and the Federation of South Arabia which provides the background to and inspiration for Without Glory in Arabia. His other publications include Jordan: A Hashemite Legacy, Conflicts in the Middle East since 1945.

Maria Holt is a Research Fellow in the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster.

An Apprpriate Desceiption of Labour Government in the Mid-Sixties

The closing years of British presence in South Arabia were remarkable for the lack of vision an aptitude on the part of Laour government that came into power in 1964. The authors capture a glimpse of the scale of damage the myobic decision of Wislon's government has caused not only to South Arabia but also to the British reputation as steadfast friends.

The authors, from their prespective, have done a good job of describing the shameful abandonment of friends in Arbia but fail to describe fully the inculcable damage such shameful policies have brought to the people of the Federation of South Arabia and Aden.

On the whole, however, the book is a good read and I find the title is atelescopic summary of the end of the British Empire.

About the Author
A 4th-generation Japanese American, Kiyosaki was educated in New York before joining the U.S. Marines and serving in Vietnam as a helicopter gunship pilot. In 1977 he founded a company producing Nylon and Velcro 'surfer' wallets which became a multi-million dollar business.

This is one of the best of the Rich Dad Poor Dad audios. The core idea in this series is that being an investor or business owner gives one more freedom and a higher upside than being someone else's employee or being an owner-operator of a business. With vivid personal stories, the authors show that many people, including the author's "poor" dad (an educational administrator), choose working for others because of insecurity or misguided trust in organizations. One builds true financial freedom by accumulating assets that make money, especially rental property. Though others have offered this advice, it's clearer and more potent here, and worth listening to many times if your financial insecurity or complacency needs a push. If You Liked Rich Dad, Poor Dad, You Must Read This One!

Repetition is the source of mastery, and The Cash Flow Quadrant takes the excellent thinking in Rich Dad, Poor Dad and builds to another level of detail. This information will increase what you learned in Rich Dad, Poor Dad and help you begin the transformation from a salaried or self-employed person into a business owner and investor.
The definitions of these four quadrants are important. As an employee, you have a job. As a self-employed person, you own a job. As a business owner you have a system (such as a franchise like McDonald's) that produces cash flow for you and others work for you. As an investor, your money works for you. Rich people are getting more than 70 percent of their cash flow and income by having money work for them.
One of the strengths of the book is that it deals with the subtle psychological differences among people in the four different quadrants, especially on subjects like security and freedom. Kiyosaki and Lechter then do a nice job of helping you understand the difference between risky and taking risk. The latter is a good idea, when you know what you are doing, and the former is always to be avoided.
The book is not dogmatic, pointing out that good results can be reached in a variety of ways. You have to decide which ones are right for you. In general, you are encouraged to move from the employee and self-employed side for your income to the business owner and investor side. Then, take your cash flow and expand it into investments.
Another of the strengths of the book is to make it clearer what the advantages of income property are. In these Internet stock-crazed days, many are looking only to stocks and missing good commercial property opportunities.
There are lots of good questions you can use to help frame your road through the cash flow quadant. At a minimum, you will become much more financially literate. With the help of the 7 steps here for making the necessary changes, you should begin to make the transition.
The book has a nice conversational tone that turns personal economics into common sense examples and principles.
The downside of any book about changing your life is that you can read it much faster than you can master the lessons and apply them. I suggest that you schedule time to reread this book over the next 10 years. That's the best way to check up on yourself and how you are doing.
I do recommend that you read Rich Dad, Poor Dad first. You'll get much more out of this book if you do that. Then you'll begin to see opportunities where others see difficulties. Good luck with fulfilling your goals!

Cash FROTH Quid pro quo!

A friend recommended this book to me. I quote from the introduction "The CFQ was written for you if your life has come to a financial fork in the road." I read with enthusiasm for the first couple of chapters then the repetition in the text started to annoy. About half way it had become an irritation to the soul but I gritted my teeth and read on! By the end I was really, really, really steamed.
The author could have reduced the number of pages by (a) 25% by dedicating this book to his wife and stating that they were poor with no assets and living out of a vehicle and off friends' graces before becoming financially free several years later. (b) another 25% by eliminating the repetition. (c) another 25% by eliminating the repetitive diagrams especially the EBSI one. (d) did I mention the repetition?
Interestingly, while the book deals with their success in general terms, it does not say HOW they did it. Indeed, the author and his wife did not appear in their own cash flow quadrant since there is no place for U [my creation] meaning the Unemployed.
So the question remained, How did they go from U and destitute to B and I in the CFQ? The answer is real estate we are told. Ok, but how does one without a job or collateral secure funds to pay the required 10% deposit. We are carefully told NOT to break the law. Real estate is key but WHERE to buy seems to be a problem. The author was magically ably to buy huge portions of land cheaply and sell with massive profits. We learn that the author learned three invaluable methods of negotiation previously unknown to him but are carefully not told what these methods were.
We are told that a true B or business owner can leave his business for a year and return to find it still functioning and more profitable than when he left it. I guess he is speaking of the fortune 500 companies then. We are told of the author's real estate properties that generate income whether he works or not. Mention is also made of mutual funds and "other" ventures. Yes, but HOW was this done...we are left to wonder.
We are then told of some failed business practices and that the majority of businesses fail however, he recommended becoming a B before moving to an I. When investing, this should be done carefully with advice of those in the know but again we are not told how or what to invest in because the author did not like giving specifics because each person's circumstance was different. ..However, in his NEXT book, RDPD's guide to investing, all will be revealed!
In his conclusion, the author reminds us to mind our own business and get into the right mind set by playing his board game CF. DUUHH!
He then proceeds to compares three groups, the Broke masses, the successful middle class investor and the rich. One group [guess which one?] has resources listed as: RDPD, CFQ, CF Game, RK tapes etc.
Finally, we live in a real world. What about persons with CHILDREN? How does this impact with day care, school fees, attendance and pick up. Funny enough, no mention is made about these entities that require HUGE sums of money to maintain, having an impact on our financial adventure!
Recommendation: Read the Richest Man in Babylon instead. It is shorter and has everything that you want to know and you can start immediately! It outlines broad principles and formulas that work which can help the ordinary person as well as the E, S or B move between quadrants and save to become an investor. It can even help the U's get into a quadrant! It talks about your family, children , wife etc. It has certainly helped me. The multiple streams of income are explained, as is the use of your money to work so you don't have to, all clearly laid out. And this book was written over 50 years ago!
Read also the Wealthy Barber, I view this as an essential follow up to the Richest Man in Babylon in the unlikely event that your eyes did not light up after reading it for the first time. This will tell you the specifics instruments available that will help you.
This book CFQ, [all 251+ pages] should have been edited removing the 82.5% FROTH leaving approximately 30 pages of material for second edit!
Comment: this book does nothing to help the ordinary citizen move into financial freedom. What it does do is ensure a stream of income for the author whether he works or not! By constantly mentioning the super rich such as Bill Gates, Ford, and so on makes one think. Of the over 220 Million persons in the USA how many Bill Gates are they? He is the exception, not he rule!
If it were possible to give negative stars, I would have here. This incomplete, rushed, advertising marvel seemed to have captured the imagination of some readers by using a diagram and re-presenting material that has been well presented elsewhere. By the way, one reader compared this book to the Richest Man in Babylon. In a word..don't. That would be like comparing little leaguers to the superbowl!
In conclusion I cannot recommend this book. It is Cash Froth Quid pro quo. We give cash; he gives froth, quid pro quo! Hence 1 star.

Broke the "Paycheck to Paycheck" Cycle

Before reading and more importantly, following the advise in Cash Flow Quadrant, I was like most people in that awful "paycheck to paycheck" cycle, "thank God it's Friday" and oh no, today it's Sunday, back to the old grindstone tomorrow" RUT.I was astonished the other day to talk with someone who I thought was doing pretty well financially. This individual said that if he missed2 paychecks, he would be bankrupt! Then I remembered that was were I was before I read and used the concepts in Cash Flow Quadrant!I would also recommend Who Stole The American Dream, The E-Myth Revisited And Multiple Streams of Income.

Brilliant novel by a true master.

This is the second in the Canopus in Argos series and it is the best. I absolutely love this story. This is a beautiful love story that evolves and transforms. This novel builds upon the first one in the series. I would start with the first book and move on from there into the whole series, as you really must do that to understand what is going on. Doris Lessing’s fresh images and vivid imagination make this series a true literary accomplishment and I’m so happy I was introduced to her writing in college. I highly recommend this series and especially this title. It was my favorite in the series and I’ve reread it several times now. Each time I find something new and fresh and come away satisfied with a good read.

Science fiction for those who really don't like SciFi

I first read this book many years ago, and had a happy memory of it. I was very pleased that a fresh reading lived up to that memory.

On its surface, it examines the roles of men and women, represented by two estranged, neighboring Zones. The first is pastoral, prosperous, and ineffective. The second is harsh, militaristic, and also ineffective. The two are not really reunited, but they break their polarization and isolation. Peaceful exchange between them is restored, and both are healthier for it.

Saying anything more would be saying too much. I was interested, though, that the nations seemed to imitate the mating of their ambassadors. One nation was archetypically male, the other female. The ambassadors, like germ cells, are living things that pass from one nation to the other, and are united. I never though about it before, but fertilization is destructive both sperm and ovum, even if somthing new comes from the fusion. The protagonists, the envoys of the two Zones, similarly suffer for the greater future. Other metaphors emerge from the story, too, and some may have strong personal meaning for you.

I really can't do justice to the elegance and peaceful pace of Lessing's writing. That, you'll have experience for yourself. Although this book is second in a series of five, they can be read in any order. Each book's story is unrelated to the others, but the set as a whole is far more than the concatenation of its parts. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and eventually enjoy coming back to it again.
