Fur, Fortune, and Empire

Too often our economic success as both individuals and as a collective society, is based on what and how much natural resources we can exploit. Fur, Fortune, and Empire illustrates this point as it traces the American fur trade from colonial times to the end of the nineteenth century. Eric J Dolin does a fine job recounting how fur trading soon became one of the staples of North America's economy, and how it then led to geopolitical maneuvering to exploit the resource for national benefit.
Dolin includes colonial fur trade, something many people do not realize was such an important contributor to our earliest national origins. The Dutch, French, and English, and to a lesser estent the Spanish, sough to best position themselves to extract the furbearing animals from their claimed lands. When America won its independence from Britain, it was in a strong position to take advantage of proximity to the forests where the beavers and other fur-bearing animals lived. Powerful entrepenuers like John Jacob Astor and Manuel Lisa provided the capital, and rugged individuals like the mountain men provided the know-how and the labor to trap the animals.
Dolin does an excellent job researching and writing his book. It is fast paced and readily divided into chapters with convenient stopping points to allow th reader to set the book down and not lose track of where the story is at. Dolens ends his account with the demise of the vast buffalo herds that both "solved" the Indian "problem" and fed the railroad builders. Americans had exploited the buffalo, the beaver, and the sea otter to the point of near extinction, but they had gained their empire for their efforts.
Dolin does not debate the ethics or the morality of wearing fur or exploiting the resources. He acknowledges that European fashions drove the fur trade and that the numbers of buffalo killed in the nineteenth century were "unfathomable" but he does not pass judgement on Astor or the mountain men. He does not criticise the Swedes and Dutch from the colonial period. Humans have been exploiting resources for generations. It is how we survive and advance as a species. Whether it is right or wrong is not for the historian to decide. The historian analyzes the details and presents her/his findings. Dolin does this well. This is the kind of book that will easily find its way into school and public libraries and it is well worth the time spent reading it.

History of fur trading and settlement of the west

This is a fascinating account of how our country was settled by fur traders moving farther and farther west. I now have great admiration for their bravery and the hardships they endured. The author gives vivid descriptions of life from the 1600’s on, and gives the reader.a sense of the importance of protecting our wildlife and natural surroundings. It is also a sad commentary on the treatment of Native Americans by the white man.

The Expansion of America Fueled by Economics, Starting with the Fur Trade

The most fascinating aspect of this book, in my view, is that it was not just about the mountain men as I expected but about the economic expansion of America led primarily by the fur trade that starts with the early colonization of the east coast. The story of the colonial drive for the fur trade was surprising yet the detail and research is quite astonishing. Particularly in the northeast, Dolin explains the competition was not only between different groups of English, but also the Swedes and the Dutch. The author references an amazing amount of facts between these groups ll through the 1600s who compete for trade with Native Americans . And as the trade died down along the coast due to the annihilation of the source of fur, Dolin offers that land became the desire of the colonists forcing more tribes west or to isolated areas. The French and Indian War was as much over trade with the Indians as it was about access to furs. As the author winds his time clock forward, he writes in detail of the emergence of mountain men almost immediately after Lewis and Clark that had a head start with the Chouteau family in St. Louis. The mountain men story has best been told by Robert Utley's book but Dolin gives it a great condensed coverage covering such men as Hugh Glass, Jedediah Smith and Kit Carson. But along with the mountain men, Dolin writes the story of the exploration of the northwest coast starting with Cook and the competition between the British and Americans that included competing fur companies. Introduced are John Astor and Manuel Lisa who crank up the trade and the infamous rendezvous. The progressive seeking of mammals that starts in large numbers with the beaver, sea otters and seals in the northwest followed by the buffalo. While telling the story of trapping or direct hunting/killing, Diolan explains not only the methods but also how hides are skinned and treated. As the author explains the trade, it is also obvious that as hunting becomes more economical, the gross increase of animals hunted and killed results in such large numbers that extermination of all sea otter and buffalo virtually occurs. As a result, the author concludes with a brief but effective description of the conservation efforts starting in the late 1800s that slowly results in national parks and animal preservation. As Dolan concludes, the fur trade was our legacy that fueled expansion but also lost control in the mass killing of animals merely for their hides.
