How to Be Alive: A Guide to the Kind of Happiness That Helps the World, by Colin Beavan

“This is the book where self-help turns into helping the world—and then turns back into helping yourself find a better life. Fascinating and timely!”—Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet

What does it take to achieve a successful and satisfying life? Not long ago, the answer seemed as simple as following a straightforward path: college, career, house, marriage, kids, and a secure retirement. Not anymore. Staggering student loan debt, sweeping job shortages, a chronically ailing economy—plus the larger issues of global unrest, poverty, and our imperiled environment—make the search for fulfillment more challenging. And, as Colin Beavan, activist and author of No Impact Man, proclaims, more exciting.

In this breakthrough book, Beavan extends a hand to those seeking more meaning and joy in life even as they engage in addressing our various world crises. How to Be Alive nudges the unfulfilled toward creating their own version of the Good Life—a life where feeling good and doing good intersect. He urges readers to reexamine the “standard life approaches” to pretty much everything and to experiment with life choices that are truer to their values, passions, and concerns.

How do you stop placing limits on your potential impact? How do you make your choices really matter in everything from your clothing purchases to your career? How do you find the people who will most support you in your quest for a good life? To answer these questions and more, Beavan draws on classic literature and philosophy; surprising new scientific findings; and the uplifting personal stories of real-life “lifequesters”—people who are breaking away from those old broken paths, blazing fresh trails, and reveling in every step along the way.

“There is a movement afoot for a better life and Colin Beavan is its prophet, with a new book as powerful as his already classic No Impact Man.”—John de Graaf, coauthor of Affluenza

If you are like me, feeling unsettled inside and unsure about how ...
By amy e. davis
One of the themes in the book is making change by starting with small things from the outside in. Last year, I heard Colin Beavan speak on this topic. I was sitting beside a friend who knew about a few of my (mis)adventures, we exchanged a glance and laughed. I had done it completely opposite. On more than one occasion, I’ve felt the need to blow up my life and start something completely new. I’m not criticizing myself for this, it's who I am. I need a fair amount of adventure and challenge to feel alive and well. But what I’ve learned, is that I also have a need for a solid home base—a community to which I can contribute in an authentic way and in which I can feel supported. How to be Alive has me thinking about how to work toward this in a more incremental and lasting way. If you are like me, feeling unsettled inside and unsure about how to take action in a way that helps yourself AND the world, I invite you to check this book out. It offers loads of tools and beautiful stories that will inspire you on your own path to finding and living the Good Life.

Inspirational!
By tcpower
This is an inspiring guidebook that can help you make changes to address the sort of feelings of helplessness a lot of people feel about the overwhelming problems of living in our world. Colin has great credibility in this area as this work springs from his own life of trying to addressing the larger problems by changing his own life and sharing the joy of doing so with others. His work has inspired me to make changes and keep striving to do more, even though most people around me don't care about things this deeply.

An excellent and important guide to how to live your life.
By John Martin
How to be Alive by Colin Beavan is subtitled “A Guide to the Kind of Happiness that Helps the World.” In this book, Beavan, who is a social change activist, provides a comprehensive guide to enable you to live a life that will bring you happiness while at the same time contributing to others. Beavan states that the book is “a quest for a joyous and meaningful life while living in a frightening and confused world that needs our help.” It is a “help each other book rather than a self-help book.” Standard life approaches are largely failures. Life is not about wanting things; it is about wanting the things that make you happy. Beavan provides the results of scientific studies that show that people who do good for others have happier and better lives than those who are largely self-serving. Helping others is doing what is most true for you and finding ways to help others will make you happiest.

The book is divided into seven parts. Part one provides basic information on how to be what Beavan calls a “lifequester.” Our brain collects stories and we begin to conform to these stories. Paralyzing stories include:
1. People are bad and there is nothing we can do to change them.
2. Others are too powerful for anyone to change them.
3. Utopia is coming—something will save us.
The question is, is the world your stories are creating the one you want to live in? To have a good life you need only two things, security and meaning.

The other parts of the book include:
How to want what you really want.
How to choose relationships that are informed by your values.
How to find people who share your values.
Who you should parent.
How to walk the path that you want to live.

There are four ways of being. A martyr is someone who does not live well, but does help others; a victim is a person who neither lives well nor helps others; a scoundrel is someone who lives well but does not help others; and finally a hero is someone who both lives well and helps others. We have 84 hours a week to spend on what is important. The last section, Rise Above the Noise, provides advice on how to deal with distractions that keep you from doing what you want to do.

I recommend this book highly. In a world where there are enormous problems and many people who engage in negative behaviors, it is important to understand how to live a positive life that will benefit you and the world.
